If religion did not exist, would the world be a less violent and safer place?

Those of us in the "know" understand that, O' Lord of the Penguins. The funny thing is hardly anyone else wants to admit it. Oy vey, eh?

Thats because Abrahamic god says "worship me or go to hell." Normally people just say go to hell. But he really does it(apparently) Hinduism is a REAL religion of peace... When was the last time they blew up a bus or train?

Now you are overgeneralizing.

Different religions see the Abrahamic God in different viewpoints.

What viewpoints? Give me examples.

Not all Christians believe that if you don't believe in the Abrahamic God you are going to hell. That's just one.

Then, if you separate the different Abrahamic religion (Judaism, Islam and Christianity), you will find thousands of different views of the Abrahamic God.

I went back and thought about the wars The USA has been a part of and I could not find one that was religious. The Revolutionary war wasn't caused by religion nor was The War of 1812, The Civil War, WWI, WWII, The Korean Conflict, The Viet Nam War, Desert Storm, and so on. None of these wars were religious wars. So how can you say that religion is the cause of war. I am not saying there never any wars dealing with religion, but certainly not all of them.

How would you react if I said that atheism is the cause of all or most wars?-- I don't think you would like that since it isn't true.

Just one? Wouldnt there be mor then one? Islam has said that their god is THE GOD. Christianity does and so does Judaism. Look at the 10 commandments.

There are more than one, but not all. I know it hurts to be told that someone thinks you are "going to hell" (as they put it) if they don't believe the same way they do, it hurts very much! Even though I am a Christian, other Christians (a few, not a lot) have told even me that since I don't believe the same way they do that I am not (in their view) not a true Christian. So I know it hurts for you to be told that as a Hindu that you are not in a true religion.

I have nothing against Hindus. My favorite singer, George Harrison, was a Hindu. I have studied a bit about the religion, but I don't understand it a whole lot. But I am not going to go as far as to say that Hindus don't believe in the same God as I do. For all I know, it may just well be the same God. That is something that I just don't know.

It doesent hurt me actually Christine. It makes me laugh that people think that they are in teh right. They don;t realise that they are whats infectign todays community. I know you have nothing against Hinduism Christine. You seem to be a nice person. When i said that about Chrstns, i didn't mean you for sure, i knwo you are not like that.

Frubals for a most excellent post!!!

If religion went away, people would find other reasons to commit acts of violence against one another. The assertion that the world would be a less violent and safer place without religion is extremely ignorant and totally unsubstantiated.

Yesterday, apparently:

Bus bombing kills 15 in Sri Lanka: police
Wed Dec 5, 2:49 PM

COLOMBO (AFP) - At least 15 bus passengers were killed and 38 wounded Wednesday in a roadside bomb attack in Sri Lanka, police said as the military claimed 36 more people were killed in other violence.

Security forces rushed to the north-central region following the bus attack, a police official in the area said by telephone. He said separatist Tamil Tiger rebels were believed to have carried out the bombing against the civilian bus.
[...]

The Tamil Tigers are predominantly Hindu. They're currently engaged in a civil war in Sri Lanka against the majority Sinhalese, who are predominantly Buddhist, to create a separate Tamil state in Sri Lanka.

Edit: This was posted as MidnightBlue was posting his... I guess great minds think alike! :)

I received an email not long ago,as I have friends over seas serving as missionaries and I support a couple other missionaries I hear storeis all the time of hindu's ,Buddist's alike are killing Christians.
It's interesting we allow them the freedom and rights to practice their religion here, but over there ,very dangerous, there lives are threatened constantly in all parts of the world by many Eastern religions .
I get reports all the time about christians being killed ,children elderly alike

What Christian missionaries coming to India set out to do is to convert Hindus. Hindu swamis go to America and 'convert' Christians. However, the big difference is that the Christian missionaries, in converting the Hindus, seek to instill hatred towards Hinduism in the newly converted whereas all Hindu swamis themselves believe in the message of Christ (to be distinguished, of course, from the message of the Church) and Christ continues to be a part of the religious life of the ‘converted’ Christians. The difference between Missionaries and Swamis is that the former has an exclusivist mindset vis-à-vis religion whereas the mindset of the later is inclusivist.

I think the subject of conversion needs to looked at from all angles and therefore I shall be starting a thread on it soon.

I am not sure who you are referring to, but I would question the validity of that person's relationship to Christ if they are in fact instilling hatred in anyone.
