If you had a billion dollars tommorow, what would you do

First my wife and I would immediately move to Hawai’i, and live w/o financial worries! Not extravagantly, just comfortably.

Then we’d establish a trust that would fund Farmers Markets on the 4 major islands, catering to the homeless & hungry individuals, and needy families!

I love farmer’s markets in Hawai’i!!
Can’t wait to go back!

That thought freaks me right out!

I want to answer “give it away - ASAP”.
But I know myself too well and, if I’m honest, I’m more likely to
a) if it’s in my bank account: pretend it’s not and forget all about it or…
b) if it’s in front of me: set fire to it.

One day, I may have to address my own fear of money.
Maybe.

Well, my goodness! Being the caring person that I am, I certainly wouldn’t want you to be fearful. So, if it ever happens to you, I’ll be glad to help ease your fears…just give it to me, ok?

Remember, I WANT TO HELP YOU!

Haha, thank you! I’ll try to keep you in mind.

Don’t hold your breath though! I only do humble work and obviously never, ever play the lottery. Unless that money magically starts growing in my back yard, I am unlikely to ever have to deal with this stressful imaginary scenario - gratefully!

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I'm thinking a billion won't be enough to have the next ride with Bezos into space. Inflation you know.

I'd buy the Tower of London, and live in it.
The Crown Jewels I'd sell off, and give half the proceeds to homeless charity Crisis.
The other half of the Crown jewels money would go to the British Museum, on condition they sent the Elgin Marbles to Athens, and stop using BP as an exhibition sponsor.

Assuming the billion is rightfully mine, I would buy every active member on RF a new minivan and then walk barefooted throughout much of Asia meeting people and listening to their stories and wisdom.

I think my thoughts might not be so charitable as others, given that any good I might be able to do with regards those I would want to help might require a lot more than this amount. Not interested in how it might affect me. So, I might gather a team of experts (?) able to analyse and organise the appropriate methods to knock out/ bump off/ eliminate so many of the individuals who seemingly are holding back progress - as I see such of course. Not exactly democratic of course. :D But perhaps effective. My list of such individuals might be an open secret. But then I do know they would likely just be replaced with replicas. It might just worry them enough to change their ways though - being extremely optimistic - as to having a target planted on them.

Be who ever you want
you don't think you could invest it and make more? Ultimately you could do that, and give it away when you die. Isn't that gates's idea
A billion is already a heck of a lot, and many who struggle today would benefit right away when I gave it away, if I wait it might be to late for many today

No right or wrong answers , I guess. Or maybe

Wauw. A billion is a lot though........
I'll just answer what I usually answer when people ask me "what if you win the lottery", which would be just a fraction of a billion....

In this order:

1. sell the house and move to a nice villa with pool. Nothing to extravagant though.

2. make a list of people in my social circle that I still wish to be able to sit at the table with, without it being "awkward". Give each person on the list a million dollars. Now everybody has money and there's no more reason to "beg" or feel jealous or whatevs. Also, I wish the people close to me well and I would love it if I could contribute like that to make their lives easier overall, so that's two for one

3. invest a certain amount into my company. Hire a small army of developers, buy out the competition and speed up the build-up of the "empire".

4. charity, but not just giving money and assuming it will be put to good use. Instead, I'ld invest in science and engineering projects that would take it to the next level. The whole "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish...". Instead of simply handing out money so that food can be bought to distribute it to some region... I'ld rather go and find out why the people don't have food and try and fix the problems that cause the situation. So that in the future - they don't require handouts anymore.
Same for climate related things. I'ld invest in projects involving technology that would contribute to actually tackling the problems instead of trying to only do "damage control".

5. buy an INSANE amount of lego. And I do mean an INSANE amount. I'ld enter the local lego store and just scream "I'll take it all!" :D

I would give almost all of it away as I think it's extremely immoral to have that much personal wealth in a world where such huge amounts of poverty and destitution exist, often side by side lavish wealth. I would keep maybe 3 million of it, pay off my debts (which aren't THAT high, lol), go to school, travel and decide from there.

A billion is a LOT of money.

I'd obviously pay off my debts, which is mostly just my house at this point.
Manage my way out of work over a period of 1-3 months.
Ensure close friends and family were debt free, including their houses and cars.
That's all barely touching the sides on this much though.

Put in place a range of very conservative investments, to ensure a safety net in all foreseeable circumstances.
Buy some local sports teams, or similar, which would effectively become my 'job'. I might do this in women's sport rather than men's, as the cost would be lower, and the money more impactful I suspect.
Call myself an author, and work slowly (but steadily) towards finishing a book or two. Which I could then get published, despite it's general crapness.
Buy a couple of nice cars. Nothing crazy, but I like nice cars.
Travel. There are a whole bunch of things I'd love to see and experience.
That's all the basic stuff I'd do.

Determine some charitable organisations I could make a real impact with.
In particular, I'd invest money into Neurofibromatosis research (my nephew is 11, and suffers from NF2).
(Neurofibromatosis - Better Health Channel)
I'd also make some money available to Patty Mills. He can either use it to run for PM (mostly joking...lol) or in supporting local indigenous communities. I honestly wouldn't know where to start with such things, but can see the value and importance in it.
(I have a man-crush on Patty Mills... | Religious Forums)

I suspect even after all of that, I'd have a truckload of money left over. But the NF research might just plow through a lot.
If not, I'd like to set up some academic scholarships to support kids who've managed to achieve despite tough backgrounds, etc. Social mobility is a key to a healthy society.

That's about all off the top of my head.

Eh, ignore it and just live life as I always do.

But whenever someone said they needed something, I'd find a way to get it to them. Preferably with them not being aware where it came from..

And I'd build a temple nearby, so I don't have to drive so far to get to mine.

I have a perfect way for you to ignore it and not have it change you.
I'll send a truck to pick it up.
