If You Had One Law to Implement, What Would it Be?

I'd pass one law (I'm doing a lot with this one law) which would:
  • Abolish the concept of 'tax havens' in law;
  • Abolish tax avoidance (for both businesses & private citizens beneath a certain networth or income threshold);
  • Make tax-gathering mandatory. If HMRC are found to have negotiated downwards on payment of due tax liabilities then the staff involved will be subject to imprisonment as accessories to tax evasion;
  • Punishment for corporate tax evasion would include a jail sentence for the executives of organisations as well as heavy fines and asset forfeiture;
  • Unpaid tax liabilities would be backdated and payment in full expected. If corporate entities refuse to comply then all their assets can be legally seized - liquid or fixed, including those of national executives;
  • Abolish the House of Lords;
  • Abolish MPs' expenses;
  • Cap MPs' salaries at triple the minimum wage;
  • Ensure common & law is prevalent in the Commons. You fiddle your expenses by flipping your second home? That's fraud - go to jail;
  • Which reminds me - MPs no longer have properties in London. They all have to stay in dormitories;
  • Abolish the unelected positions reserved for Christians in Scottish governance at all levels;
  • Give Scotland independence and reset her maritime border to what it was before 1997;
  • Outlaw unconventional gas extraction;
  • Invest heavily in renewables to free the UK from dependency on barbarian oil;
  • Outlaw corporate courts from operating in the UK. Any corporation found to be a member of any such court attempting to sue British governance at any level would have its executives jailed without trial (irony) and its assets seized;
  • Take X number of year's worth of British 'defence' funding and invest it in a massive digging project. I'd dig up the City of London, tow it out to sea and nuke it;
  • Legally abolish the Monarchy and place all their properties in public ownership;
  • Hell, I'd tow the Royal Family out to sea and nuke them too;

And before anybody responds to any of this: Sunstone said only one law, not that it could only do one thing or that it had to be workable! :p

I would pass a law calling for a culling of the masses.

Everyone with extreme hereditary diseases, everyone with extreme birth defects, everyone with extreme mental health issues, everyone with an incredibly high genetic disposition for cancer, everyone who is morbidly obese, everyone with HIV and AIDS and certain other non-curable diseases would all be rounded up into camps and mercifully be put to death. Among others.

It would be a horrible event in human history... but future generations of humanity would benefit far, far more than people would like to admit.

Indeed, and if you have nothing to hide, what is the issue?
That's what government wants you to think.
But consider.....
- Everyone violates some law now & then. (There are so dang many.)
- Government can spin something innocent into something nefarious as a pretex for persecution.
- Government makes mistakes.
- We have a right to privacy.
- Prosecutors can conduct vendettas.

I've been in court a lot.
I've seen abuse, incompetence, danger, evil.....& even justice (occasionally).
I know.

If you could implement just one law, what would it be? Why?
That on a regular basis, old laws would be revisited and potentially removed, to clean out the ever growing law books. California law is larger than the laws in most countries. At some point, there should be some "spring cleaning."

I agree! And we should start by culling the folks who want to cull people. Obviously, those folks who can't grasp the advantages of a large, diverse human gene pool, and the disadvantages of narrowing it, are undeserving of life.
