If your child's religion is different.

Do you 'know' or believe?
I do not have children (though I have Godchildren despite their parents being aware that I do not share their Christian faith - go figure) however were I to have children I would not be concerned with regulating their choice in beliefs, just as I would not be concerned with regulating their choice in sports (I would however encourage them to be active and to be mindful of others, thus to exercise good sportsmanship).

Instead I believe that it is the parent's role to encourage their children to obtain (and to actually use) different tools - ways of thinking, of examining their environment, what they are being told and so forth as well as a general framework by which to guide their life, i.e. to provide a vague system of values. It is these different tools and guidelines that parents are supposed to provide, not some arbitrary belief system.

As long as my future children don't join a destructive cult, I'm fine with whatever they choose. I definitely wont force my beliefs on them, and I'll try to avoid talking about my own religious beliefs as much as possible. If they ask, I'll answer them, but I'll try to give them both sides. I was raised to be open-minded. I might have been pushed towards Christianity a bit (definitely the progressive kind, though), but we rarely discussed religion at home and my family has quite some diversity in their views (Christianity, Atheism, New Age etc).

Forcing a child to believe certain things can cause them a lot of pain growing up. I've heard too many stories of people crying themselves to sleep over being scared of hell or not feeling accepted for being who they are.

Yeah, that last bit was me. It was pure hell.
