Personally, I suspect the author of Genesis was a bit egotistical.
They saw themselves as the height of intelligence on the planet and assumed this somehow correlated to what God must be like.

Maybe they knew something "rational" that is alien to many modern people.

Hi Fool,

I just wanted to point out that there is a big difference between being made in the image of God, and actually being the image of God.

Man was made in the image of God according to Genesis. But the Messiah was the image of the invisible God. Colossians 1:15
