Incest in the bible

Yes Lot's a victim alright.:sarcastic We certainly can't blame him for getting so drunk he didn't know what was happening. No can't do that!

o well come on. I mean he is responsible for that yes, but I'm sure he wasn't thinking " I don't know if I should drink all this my daughters might rape me!" YA right.

I could be wrong... but didn't Abraham have another son at Sarah's request because she had lost faith that a son was coming? And after she finally DID conceive, did she not send Ishmael and his mother into the desert to fend for themselves? Abraham's sin in this case is the cause of (from a Christian standpoint) Islam. I remember being taught this at my high school.

Well no, it wasn't the origin of Islam, it was the origin (I think) of the Arab people group(s). That these groups later identified with Islam has nothing to do with Abraham's sin. What Abraham's sin meant was that Ishmael and his descendents would be constantly violently struggling with their neighbours.

I just got a brand new bible from my local church for free, it is a nice hard cover study Bible (NLT version). I re-read that passage and since it had commentary I decided I wanted to post for anyone who was interested.

In this pitiful sequel to the story of the destruction of Sodom, we see two women compelled to preserve their family line. They were driven bot by lust but by desperation - they feared they would never marry. Lot's tendency to compromise and refusal to act reached its peak. He should have found right partners for his daughters long before this; Abraham's family wasn't far away. Now the two daughters stooped to incest, showing their acceptance of the morals of Sodom. We are most likely to sin when we are desperate for what we feel we must have.

I totally agree with this commentary and it reflects all of our combined posts, thanks again everyone.

Truthfully, it depends on the culture. In current times, most "civilized" nations frown apon incest; but if you take a look back through histroy, royal families inbred to keep their "royal blood" "pure"(which did, however, lead to birth defects). The roman catholic church allows incest to a certain degree, ie. between second and third cousins.
Also, almost every human alive is a result of incest; meaning that at some point in everyone's family tree, inbreeding occured. If you look at it from an evolutionary standpoint, it would have been difficult to populate the earth to its current levels without relatives procreating with other relatives. If you look at it from a "black-belt" christian point of view(the ones who belive in the creation story of Adam and Eve) then incest MUST have occured to populate the land.
Basically it is up to the individual to determine wheter it is right or wrong, and for the ones who will support it being a sin using scripture, then just take a look back at Adam and Eve; whether it was right or wrong, it happened.

Ya true, but again it depends on the situation. like repopulation
