Income Taxes Due When?

For those of you who battle with the IRS, when do you think your forms & $ are due:
1) Today - April 15
2) Tomorrow - April 16
3) Tuesday - April 17

Why?

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
They are due April 17.

Not sure why.

I want to take this opportunity though, to THANK THE 50.5 PERCENT OF AMERICANS WHO CARRY 100 PERCENT OF THE FEDERAL TAX LOAD.

Yes, Virginia - it's true. Some people DON'T GET A TAX REFUND. Some people actually pay MORE in on April 17, even though they've paid federal taxes all year long.

But for me, Tax Day was Friday the 13 of this year. Paid up and saving again for next year's big hit.

Tuesday, the 17th. Though, like Kathryn, not sure why. I've never waited til the last moment to file and neither has turk. We both have always made the habit of, as soon as we have all the documents to file, we file. Usually taken care of in February or March.

I think some state or two might have some kind of holiday on Monday.
That's why the Tue deadline.
Or so I've heard.

I always thought tax day was the 15th.

... Good Government, I forgot to celebrate Tax Day!
Good thing I still have a couple hours left... :)

EDIT: Oh, wait, it's the 17th this year? That's strange... but at least I now have time to wish all of my professors and classmates a happy Tax Day! :D

Because I'm Canadian. :D
I thought Canuckistan paid you guyz taxes!

Anyway, the 15th fell on a Sunday, so Monday would be the due day, were it not for some civil rights holiday in DC (according to my CPA).
I'm just sending an estimated payment & filing for an extension. Still more work & research to do....it's amazing what complications can arise.

Yup.

I found out that I have to get my ex's tax info from her. I thought I could just file on my own, being separated, but no: the CRA doesn't consider you separated until you've been separated for 90 days, so as of December 31, in their eyes, I wasn't separated. Arrgh.

We think we live one way.
They think we live another.
Their accounting standards are pure Bizarro World

Thank God for good CPA's is all I have to say.

We have both personal and business taxes to file. The tax code is so incredibly complex that there's no way we could keep up with all the regulations.

My CPA says that the code is a probabilistic thing. A great many things are neither true nor false....just more or less likely to
survive an audit. The code is an incredible drain on the economy, but alas, only 1 per cent of the taxpayers even glimpse this.

Well, the issue I have with it is this - We have to sign the tax paperwork - in other words, sign off on it as if we know it's correct. And how would we even know?

It's ridiculous. It reminds me of this quote by Ayn Rand:

"The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."

I've noticed this too. It's how they go after people whose only crime is misstatements of fact during investigations, eg, Martha Steward.
They wanted her, they pursued her, she couldn't be convicted of the crimes they wanted, so she was convicted on other grounds.
If only we could hold politicians to this standard, it would put the fear of Willie in them.

Right - and the media smear campaign on her made her unlikable to the public.

I notice much demonization and class warfare diatribe toward "the wealthy" today as well. In other words, anyone making over $200,000 a year.

NO MERCY. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

Us against them....such an effective tactic.
People are so ready to believe it's true.
