Increasing our faith

Ramadan is near and I only wish to be satisfied with myself in Ramadan this year. And I want now to prepare myself for it.
My self directs me to wherever it wants and I want to struggle against it. It's like I forgot the meaning of Jihad-ul-nafs.
Also the meaning of sincerity is lost, the love of this dunya leaked into my heart and I want to purify it. Doing anything for only the sake of God is not an easy thing at all and I wish for this meaning to be alive in my heart again.

So I'd like your pieces of advice, your experiences, your thoughts to increase faith in the heart.
It would be also great if we agreed on certain things to do together....

Response: As salaamu alaikum sister,

This is a very good topic. I myself was just about to create a similar thread but you beat me to the punch.

My advice to you sister is two things:

The first would be to understand the importance of sacrifice, something which ramadan should help you grasp because love is a sacrifice. Putting your needs and wants second to someone else is love. During ramadan, we do just that. We sacrifice food and intimacy for the sake of Allah(swt). We increase are charity and focus more on Allah(swt) through are studies of the qur'an and its reading as well.

My other peace of advice would be unity. You should get yourself more acquainted with those who are close to you and try to be even more compassionate to them. This should help bring more peace not only to you but to your inner circle. Having a circle of people around you all the time that represents purity and islam in the most beautiful ways will help to increase your passion to do what's right and have less of a temptation to do what's wrong. This is very important. The company you keep plays a vital role on the influence around you. And when you feel alone and by yourself, you can always come here and talk to your fellow brothers and sisters. Surely, we would love to hear from you and help out in any way possible. But above all, always seek refuge in Allah (swt) first, from your salaat.

Edit: For things we can do together, I was thinking the same as well. I have several ideas. I was thinking of the idea that we should watch a movie together, any on islam, than return to the thread for further discussion of the movie and what are views of the movie or even a lecture. There are many youtube videos about islam. Perhaps we can select a few. I was just watching an animated cartoon about the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It was very entertaining. Just a suggestion.

Hello!
I know I am not Islamic, but I think you ask a very important question and I want to try and answer if that's okay. :) If not, just ignore my post.

I totally agree with what Fatihah said. Sacrifice, and compassion for those around us. I am often discouraged and tempted to do evil. But I can never ignore the feeling when I think of all my blessings. Think about Allah. Think about how much he loves you. I know that he loves you so much. That is why he has blessed us with so much. That is why we have anything good in our lives. Think about those you love and who love you. Think of all he has done to help his children. The best thing to do is to kneel down and pray to him. If I understand you right, you sometimes have conflicting feelings about serving Allah or serving yourself. Of course this is natural. This life is about overcoming that conflict. But you don't have to do it alone. I know that Allah loves you and wants to help you. Tell him how you feel and that you want to do his will but need help. Being the wise, caring person that he is, he will help you. I promise you that he will listen to you and comfort/guide you and he will change your heart. Please realize that although I am not Muslim, I have the greatest respect for Muhammed and his message. My only desire is to help because I often feel as you do, but I know that if we trust in Allah, he will surely bless us.

Well said. It is important to remember that only with God's help can we increase our faith. Otherwise we shall remain mere submitters and not true believers(49:14).

Thank you for your good replies including Davy. :)

I need a reminder to remind me of the hereafter, God...etc. So I aim to join a course/a circle for reciting and memorizing the Qur'an. I will try my best to to listen to religious lessons for famous preachers, an episode everyday...

I will also try to pray minimum two rak'a Qiyam Layl (the night prayer) every night.

These three things I want to focus on now. :)

I read something in the Qur'an today that really struck me. It was very short and simple. Admittedly, it's in English, so I don't get the full beauty of the original Arabic. But it said this "Seek you help in patience and prayer." It made me think that Allah was there, ready and waiting to help us. That he wants us to succeed and be happy. But we must ask him for help. I am sure that as you seek to do his will, he will help you. Just remember to love Allah and to love your fellow man. This makes everything easier. If we can love those around us, it is much easier to do Allah's will because his will becomes our will. May you find success in your pursuit. We are all here for you and want you to succeed. We all have to struggle at times in our life. Good Luck! :)

Allah said in the Qudsi Hadith:
Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him.

The first time I read this hadith my eyes couldn't help but be filled with tears and my mind was like in a state of surprise and wonder and kept asking "is this actually possible?!" "doing only this and God will love me...me, that much , He will by my hearing and my seeing!!" "How come I haven't known about this before". My heart felt marvelous nearness, love and beauty coming from Him...I just can't describe what I felt in words...

Why are we so far from Him and He is so near to us? Why we disobey Him that much and We live in His mercy and generosity?

This Hadith is so deep that I know it touched everyone of us but I wanted to share it...

I was talking about this issue with my cousin last night. I'll register with a circle of Quran next week insha'Allah and i think it will be the start to soften my current rough lazy forgetful heart. May Allah forgive me for not being currently as i supposed to be, but alhamdulilah i been guided to the way to correct this for i have been a bit far from reading the Quran. I hope this would be the first step to increase my faith, memorizing the Quran.

I need a reminder

73/MUZEMMİL-8: Vezkurisme rabbike ve tebettel ileyhi tebtîlâ(tebtîlen).

Do dhikr (remember and repeat the name of Allah) with the name of your Lord and turn to Him with complete devotion.
