"Indian Dog": Racism on Big Brother UK?

One of the bigger entertainment stories in Europe this week. A Bollywood actress on Celebrity Big Brother UK is apparently being treated to a jolly cup of British racism while on the show. ;)

LMAO:

"My name is Shilpa, Jackie, get it right!"
"Well, I don't understand it."
"You don't need to understand it, it's not a sentence! It's a ****ing name!"

Shilpa has gained the sympathy of the British public and she will probably win. Most of the so-called celebrities are has-beens or never-will-bes, so some of the others are probably jealous that she has real tallent and a huge following. The real puzzle is why someone like her would bother with such a tacky TV programme.

It is a bit weird, isn't it, Phil? I suppose one country's biggest celebrities are another's curious oddities. Take American celebrities in Japan, for example. They're very famous, yes, but they do silly commercials for laundry detergent and all that sort of thing there.

I take your point. Some in the media are suggesting that the antagonism is more to do with class than race. Shilpa is "a lady" while the ones bullying her are "common as muck".

Well, watching that first clip of her introducing herself - that wouldn't surprise me. I think there's still an element of race, though, or the insults would've been about class and not race. They'd have been "snob", or "aristocrat", or something - instead of "Indian dog".

I think it's a bit of a grey area really. I think it's bullying with racist undertones as they simply arn't intelligent enough to think of anything else to say (not that i condone bullying in any situation). I think it's jealousy due to the fact that Shilpa is more of a lady and more graceful then the 3 women put together.
It made me laugh that the girl from Liverpool had the raw nerve to say that she didn't understand Shilpa's accent, if you ever heard a Liverpool persons accent you would know why it made me laugh, and no it wasn't a 'i find this funny' laugh.
I really don't think the 3 girls are aware of just how famous Shilpa is compared to the 3 of them combined.
I hope she doesn't win due to the pitty vote but I can see that happening.
It's just a shame that big brothers ratings havn't gone down since these incidents, infact they have rocketed.

Come one it's Jade in the big brother house she ain't exactly the sharpest tool in the box.

But I don't think BB is helping by allowing this to continue.

They will because it's good for their ratings though.

You know the old adage: "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

True,
I do wonder though given the lack of white people who have been asked about what they think of the racism claims (next to none from what I have seen on the news), how many white british people have complained to ofcom. I would love to see the list of names of people who complained as the racial minority in this country would be sufficient enough to make up the numbers for the amount of complaints.
I'm just wondering if it would be taken as seriously if it were a white british person being bullied?
Just a thought!

The one who made the comments (Jade) is well.....mentally challenged.

I don't suppose for a second that she meant to be racist; she just reacted in a typical "Jade" manner; had the Actress been Fat, Jade would have insulted her on that premise.

Quite frankly, anyone who goes onto Big Brother is asking to be ridiculed, put under pressure, and goodness knows what................

I was watching the news here, where they were showing scenes of burning effigies; having said that, an Indian newscaster was saying that a lot of the indian population did not actually see it as a racist slur............

Had the Girl been a German girl, the comments would have been accepted with no surprise; this is yet another case of P.C "gone wrong". I feel sorry for the Indian actress, but, by agreeing to go on such a programme, she was "letting herself in for it..."

Welcome to everday life in Britian (at least where i grew up). Speaking your mind is more important than kindness and manners. You are not cool unless you swear, smoke, sleep around, try drugs, listen to vulgar music etc. People like Jade Goody are to be found in multiple quantities and living near to them makes many peoples life a misery. Shilpa has been a wonderful example of good manners, gentleness and friendliness and good for her that she hasn't compromised her values just to fit in with the vulgar brits.

Inner city u.k is a hellhole, full of mindless, vicious, nasty, anti social, disrespectful eminem wannabees and the parents just want to be the kids best friends in many cases.

How we need a revival before we are plunged back into the dark ages.

I'm of Indian descent and I'm a big fan of Indian movies. I do not see the TV show in question, perhaps it is shown on cable. I read the article about Shilpa Shetty in yesterday's newspapers. Those "youtube" things don't come up on my computer for some reason. I was really upset because she's a great actress. She's very talented and she's beautiful....

My Mother has mentioned this ( her being the only one in the family who watches it) and I think it's pretty disgusting.

I think there should be police ready to take those responsible away on race hate crimes.

I am definitely not cool! in that case, and proud of it...:cover:

But you are unfortunately quite right about the way the teenagers grow into this self destructive culture.

I heard on the news at lunch that the police are now involved.

I never did any of those things, even when I was a teenager. Hey, we define "real" cool. We don't follow the crowd. We do our own thing.

I still see it as no more then petty bullying and if the shoe were on the other foot we would see it as entertainment as we have in the past.
Not that i'm condoning bullying but nobody complained about it in the past!
I think there are more important issues the government and police should be focusing on rather than wasting time on a crappy tv show that has z list 'celebrities' in it!
People die every day from starvation yet they don't get half of the attention that this show has had the past few days.

The shows ratings had been falling.
Racism always provokes reaction which in turn causes interest.
Is big brother totally uncontrolled by the producers?
I doubt it.. when ever ratings dip something happens... sex acts, fighting etc...
Have I ever watched it... no.
Do I care... yes
when the interests of TV making money, cause racial tension and unrest it is time to look at our priorities.

I'd love to see her on Big Brother Croatia or Bosanska Kuca (Bosnian House). Hahaha, oh she wouldn't know what hit her.

Translations of Indian music into Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian have gotten popular here but I don't think that's enough to erase 2,000 years of "Eww...gross!".

According to the latest news programmes, the sponsor of the show (Carphone Warehouse) has supended its support, and the police are investigating the case. In case you did not know, in the UK there are specific laws covering racial abuse and violence, stirring up racial hatred, etc.
