Indonesian Governor jailed for "Blasphemy"

An excerpt from the link below:

  • Long touted as a beacon of Muslim tolerance and moderation, Indonesia joined other repressive Muslim nations in May when it sentenced the Christian governor of Jakarta, known as "Ahok," to a two-year prison term on the charge that he committed "blasphemy" against Islam.

  • The blasphemy accusation is based on a video that Ahok made, in which he told voters that they were being deceived if they believed that Koran 5:51, as his opposition said, requires Muslims not to vote for a non-Muslim when there are Muslim candidates available. The Koran passage states: "O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you -- then indeed, he is one of them."

IMO, those two paragraphs speak for themselves. The only thing I'd like to add is that given this sort of incident, it seems more and more clear that the strength of Islam's political arm adds credence to the orientation that Islam is a totalitarian ideology that includes a religious facet.

One has to study the Laws of the Land to ensure you remain a Law abiding citizen. It's the same in any Country, Democratic or otherwise.

Indeed. And if blasphemy is the law of the land in Indonesia, then Islam is not merely a religion, it is a totalitarian ideology masquerading as a religion.

It's always been a COMPLETE way of life, just as Judaism and Christianity were once.

It would not bother me so much if it was confined to far off countries, but since globalisation, it is encroaching on western civilisations.

It's no secret that Islam among other abrahamic religions is that of subjugation.

I guess Indonesia actually is one of the more tolerant and moderate Muslim majority nations because there are a number of them where he would have been tortured and executed for blasphemy.

What is worse is the apologists in my eyes, I remember a news reporter (which I don't remember the name of, will try to find) saying the daylight beheading of Lee Rigby in the U.K. wasn't really that horrible, it was just a matter of cultural differences.

Religious discrimination is one of the reasons why problems can't be solved by humanity. If they are happy with someone less capable and less liked that's of their religion, I'm sure someone will volunteer.

What can you expect when there is OT and NT precedence to support such intolerance and divisiveness?

By the looks of it, the Mayor was likely the best candidate for the job, and the sore losers in opposition used religion as an excuse to silence him. It's similar to the smear campaigns used in the West. Trump insisting Obama was a not born American etc.

But in a theocracy, the danger is worse.
Indonesia....governor goes to prison.
Americastan....Obama is merely insulted by challenges to his birth place.

There will be evil people anywhere.
But a system which gives them more power to oppress others is a bad system.

The law is actually from the Dutch colonial era.

Icehouse said "Islam is a totalitarian ideology that includes a religious facet."

It seems to me that all religions are governments with totalitarian ideologies: There is the supreme leader with his 'holy' book of laws, and there is enforcement of laws, protocols and strictures, and finally there is excommunication. Throughout history religions have generally always assumed they were the ultimate authority, above any civil authority, and they were in various periods of history such as the Middle Ages. And when the United States was first formed, each state was a different religious denomination, each attempting to gain more power and control.
