I heard about this problem yesterday and the White House said today that they, "moved as quickly as a problem became apparent to us."

People can visit HHS.gov/formula if they are searching for infant formula.

The government is considering using the US Defense Production Act, like Trump did with meat.

"...families on (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC) can purchase any available product in the months to come, and states and retailers can plan ahead as they work to keep their stocks shelved, and most importantly provide certainty for families," the spokesperson said."

The illegal immigrants at the border are getting formula. Their babies are not being killed.

Abbott Nutrition said a press release Friday that since the shuttering of its Sturgis, Michigan, facility in February, the company has "air shipped millions of cans of infant formula powder into the U.S." from its U.S. Food and Drug Administration-registered plant in Cootehill, Ireland.

Many people are finding alternatives and sharing with each other.

Ah, right wing disinformation is what you meant by "news".

And are you suggesting there are American babies being killed? Or are you making a desperate, emotional appeal to some in the group?

I've heard some coverage of this story but didn't pay close attention to why it closed. I thought there was an issue with the facility.

One reason the there is a shortage for so many is that there was a panic and many are buying as much as they can get, much like the TP shortage in the early pandemic.

Frankly I don't see how the government is at fault with what private companies provide as products to the public. Would this be a right wing freakout is the shortage was due to banning abortion and 900,000 more babies being born in the USA in the next 12 month?

So looking into the story of why Abbott closed its planet, they had a major recall of products due to bacterial contamination at the facility. The result was that they closed to do maintenance and cleanup.

There is a huge regulatory pressure on companies that produce formula, and apparently there's been some corruption involved in what regulations are imposed and what companies can apply them, thus getting them more of a monopoly on the production. This monopoly is one reason why there is a lack of available products. The Biden administration might adjust the regulations and allow imports from Canada and other nations.

I think that's good because the government takes good care of those under it's wings, be they me in the mental health system, arguably veterans, illegal immigrants under custody, and those working at national labs.

Are illegal people undeserving of formula? Are the affected babies blameworthy and undeserving?

It seems that a lot of our infant milk formula is sold to China from Australia. Some of that is done privately with people buying up formula and shipping to China to make a profit.
There is a new milk formula available however which has the potential to solve the problem. Breast milk from the mothers of the babies. It sounds like a great idea to me but has proved problematic for some mothers it seems, for various reasons.

The questions in response to my post don't make sense to me as a response. But the specifics as to why there's that requirement: Unaccompanied Minors and the Flores Settlement Agreement: What to Know > National Conference of State Legislatures

Under the agreement, INS is required to place minors in the least restrictive setting appropriate to the child’s age and special needs, provide notice of rights, safe and sanitary facilities, toilets and sinks, drinking water and food, medical assistance, temperature control, supervision, and contact with family members, among other requirements.
