I've listened to only instrumentals since the late '80's

For some reason instrumentals get me in the mood way much more than vocals (if I get the right word).
Me too.

Pure instrumental, from classical to ambient to trance and techno, all affect me much more than vocal lead songs. Vocals can be part of really great instrumentals too, like a hybrid, but it's a part of it, not overtaking it. The vocals as another instrument, in other words.

And sometimes vocals on good instrumentals ruins it badly that I desperately look for non-vocal versions sometimes.
