Ireland bans stag hunting

I don't really care.

But it would be a very sad day for us if stag hunting was banned on this side of the pond.

I am surprised it was not banned years ago in such a small country.
I find it strange that there are 4000 stalking licences ... probably more than the number of mature stags.

Farms/reserves/whatever ain't good enough for you?

Hunting is a primal thingie. I'd hate to live in a sanitized & controlled world where we no longer have hunting, boxing, MMA, rugby, fencing, shooting, competing, carnivorating,
& dirty jokes. Might as well neuter us all so we can safely & quietly sit around on environmentally friendly ergonomic futons emoting & sharing feelings while we snack on gluten
free vegan carob & tofu eclairs.

How many farms raise stags?

But no, I'd prefer to hunt and kill my own meat. Yum.

Just because it's not a domesticated species doesn't necessarily mean it cannot be raised on a farm/reserve.

I can understand your pain though, some people just like to kill for their next meal

More like once a year, sometimes even less. It helps to control the population, which is a win-win situation for area famers/ranchers.

Stags produce a lot of meat that can be frozen. You get several pounds of sausage, hamburger meat, and many other cuts.

Wouldn't killing hinds (females) be more useful though for population control?

Can't argue w/ you there  Care to send some stag steaks? :p

In the UK and most of Europe all stags are owned by some one, usually the owner of the estate where they live. In some of those countries Estate owners do run stag hunts. There is no where, where you could just go out and bag a stag and take it home. Even the land covered by national parks has owners.

You would find the law, the RSPCA, and a very irate land owner on your tail.

Yes.

In the US, we have deer leases. A hunter must buy the permission to hunt on the owner's land with a lease OR otherwise get permission from the owner.

We also have reserves that allow a certain number of hunters in per year to reduce the population by quota.

I want a new RF rule that states that posters who start threads that have anything to do with venison should be prepared to serve venison to any poster that should become hungry upon reading it.

Don't forget about the states with state game lands where all residents can hunt for free once they've purchased a hunting license. 6 deer a year for $40. You can't beat that.

I agree!

Shame that stags are only seen as a sport to kill and trophies to collect from their heads.

That's my personal view.

Well in my country that's all I hear most people talking about, hunting a stag. I had a neighbor that use to hang their corpses in his open garage like a butcher shop.

I agree. I live next to an Estate that attracts tourist deer hunters. Often their shots are not accurate and the injured deer has to be tracked and shot by the ghillie (professional stalker), by which time the animal has gone through considerable suffering. It is usually the 12- or 14-pointer stags that are stalked, whereas, if population control really was the objective, the females would be shot. They don't make quite as nice 'ornaments' on the wall, though...
