Irregardless

'Irregardless' is not a proper word! :banghead3

Sorry, little pet peeve of mine. I've seen the word at least twice on this forum in the past couple days. Just had to say that without calling someone out on a thread.

'I could care less' is another one that drives me crazy, the proper usage is 'I couldn't care less'

Oh, I'm sure there are others, but those are my biggies.

Do you have any grammar pet peeves you'd like to share so we all can learn? :D

I was wondering if i was gonna get called on that. Sorry, but i'm sworn to use it once a week for as long as Bush is our fearless (world) leader. Lost a drunken bet.

Incedently, i don't believe it's a grammatical error, just a meaningless word.

To use a meaningless word in relation to Bush....How could you?

Such things do not drive me crazy but sometimes I notice them.

1) "How are you?" "I'm doing good." My brain always says, "No, you're doing well."

2) People say jealous when they really mean envious. When you fear losing something that you have, that's jealousy. When you want something that someone else has, that's envy.

3) A lot is not one word; it's two.

That's all that comes to mind off the top of my head. But don't misunderestimate me. Since language does evolve as it's used, my strategery is generally to let it go.

I'm lucky, i'm not good at English and I don't understand American,
So I can't tell, half the time, if it is good or bad.

I always correct people when they do that and they look at me like I have a frog on my face.

I hate the "I could care less" thing too. I also just say, "Oh, you could? what do you care less about?" or something like that. I don't mind when people mix up good and well as long as it's after "how are you." If people mix up their adjectives with their adverbs any other time I get really mad. Especially with "easier" and "more easily."

heheh - I've got a string of pet peeves............

I could have done........ sounds like I could of done......... and yes, there are people writing I could of done...:p

Controversy - historically, the inflexion was on the second syllable; for some reason, in the mid sixties, the BBC decided to move the inflexion to the third syllable.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh, and the one that does upset me is the use of apostrophes; "We sell spade's, melon's and beds" -(not the right articles, but you get the idea) - people seem to have a mental block with the apostrophe.

oh, and one last one; "Aspirins are good for headaches" ; "O.K well since I don't like headaches, I think I'll avoid Aspirins.........":biglaugh:

Eeep! I know I've been guilty of all of these (especially the abuse of the poor comma and jelpless apostrophes)!

Ain't
Ain't got

The lack of infinitives. Example: The car needs washed.

No, the car needs washing or the car needs to be washed.

Plus all the ones listed above and I wouldn't say they're a pet peeve (other than ain't and ain't got), but I notice when they're abused.

Double negatives (I don't know if you suffer from them is USA)

"I ain't got none" = (logically) I have some.:biglaugh:

It's in the dictionary, therefore it is a word. :)

That is so funny! When I saw the title of this thread -- before I actually opened it up -- I thought to myself, "Irregardless?" Not another person using that non-existent word!

'I could care less' is another one that drives me crazy, the proper usage is 'I couldn't care less'
Right again.

Do you have any grammar pet peeves you'd like to share so we all can learn? :D
Are you kidding? My degree is in English. I'm fanatical about proper English. Not that it wil make any difference, here are some of my pet peeves.

1. People use the words "they" and "them"(i.e. third person plural) when they should use the words "he" and "him" (i.e. third person singular). For example:

Wrong: "If a person reads the Bible every day, they'll learn what God expects of them."
Right: "If a person reads the Bible every day, he'll learn what God expects of him."

2. People don't know when to use "me" and when to use "I."

Wrong: Jonny and me answer questions about LDS doctrine.
Right: Jonny and I answer questions about LDS doctrine.

Wrong: If you have a question about Mormonism, ask Jonny and I.
Right: I you have a question about Mormonism, ask Jonny and me.

Wrong: Scott knows more about Catholicism than me.
Right: Scott knows more about Catholicism than I.

3. This one drives me nuts: I can't believe how many people don't know how to use apostrophes. Sometimes I wonder if people just put an apostrophe before the letter "s" in any word that ends in "s."

Wrong: One peach. Two peach's.
Right: One peach. Two peaches.

Wrong: The last name of the family who lives in this house is Peters. It is the Peter's house.

Right: The last name of the family who lives in this house is Peters. It is the Peters' house.

What did you get me started for? I could go on and on and on and on and on! And already, people are thinking, "Whoa! I don't think I want to post any more! Katzpur's checking out my grammar!"

I hadn't read your post when I responded, but this was one of mine, too. Apostrophes are not that hard to understand!

Is it anyones pet peeve to interact with others who have a multitude of pet peeves?

Is it anyones pet peeve to interact with somebody too apathic to the notion of pet peeves to even have one? :banghead3

Is it anyones pet peeve to call you on your pet peeves before you announce them?

Is it anyones pet peeve to be asked to comply with the avoidance of certain pet peeves?
