Is America a Police state?

If one does genuine research on this topic, or just even keeps up with the news (Government spying on calls & computer, et al), who wouldn't say it is a police state? Perhaps those living under a rock.

It certainly seems to be going that way, what with police forces being outfitted with what seems to be military technology and drones being put into action here.

Rochester Teens Arrested For Obstructing The Sidewalk While Waiting For School Bus | ThinkProgress

Three teen boys waiting for a school bus in Rochester, N.Y., were arrested Wednesday, after police claimed they obstructed pedestrian traffic by standing on the sidewalk.

The 16 and 17-year-old boys were charged with disorderly conduct, a catch-all that is often used to criminalize conduct of the homeless, or to punish those who are perceived as simply uncooperative, including school children.

A police report obtained by WROC in Rochester said the students were obstructing “pedestrian traffic while standing on a public sidewalk…preventing free passage of citizens walking by and attempting to enter and exit a store…Your complainant gave several lawful clear and concise orders for the group to disperse and leave the area without compliance.”

The boys told police they were waiting for a school bus to take them to a scrimmage basketball game, and when their coach arrived he told police they were doing exactly what they were supposed to. But rather than let the boys go as coach Jacob Scott asked, police threatened to arrest Scott also.

“I said, ‘Sir, I’m the adult. I’m their varsity basketball coach. How can you book me? What am I doing wrong? Matter of fact, what are these guys doing wrong?’,” said Scott, who is also a guidance counselor at the boys’ school.
WOW......!!!!

Unbelievably lenient sentence for cop who fingered suspects' anuses | The Daily Caller

The end of 2013 brought a measure of closure to a long-running Milwaukee police scandal, though some say the officer — and his cohorts — who repeatedly and illegally shoved his fingers up black male suspects’ anal cavities got off with a light sentence considering the flagrant nature of his abuses.
The ringleader was identified as officer Michael Vagnini, a white man who routinely targeted black males as young as fifteen for sadistic — and blatantly illegal — anal searches.
One victim said that another officer put a gun to his head while Vagnini administered a choke hold, touched his scrotum and fingered his anus. Another man was probed so violently that he bled.
Wisconsin law clearly prohibits police officers from administering cavity searches. Only medical professionals may do so, and only when authorized by a warrant.
But lack of a warrant or a medical degree did not stop Vagnini from sticking his fingers inside a 15-year-old boy’s anus and touching his genitals during a traffic stop in December of 2011.
The Journal Sentinel documented at least a dozen similar instances of Vagnini performing invasive, illegal searches on black men. According to his reports, some of the victims were indeed carrying drugs, though they contend that the officer lied about the details and even planted drugs inside their bodies.
One man, Keon Canada, was searched by Milwaukee police on four separate occasions. They searched his buttcheeks and opened the front of his pants. No drugs were found during any of the searches.
Vagnini rarely used gloves when he probed their anuses, the victims contend. He also stole personal items and laughed when asked to present a warrant.
A violent serial rapist gets only 2 years in the pokey.

Woman Suing Over Amputation Following Arrest « CBS Pittsburgh
According to the complaint, that alleged treatment caused her to suffer from compartment syndrome, which is increased pressure that damages muscles and nerves. The attorney says while his client sat in jail, she made 16 requests to see a doctor for treatment but was denied.
“They never sent her a doctor. Never took her to the doctor. She developed a septic shock. The infection went over and she almost died and they had to take off her arm to prevent her from dying,” Leibowitz said.

Amazing I haven't participated in this thread yet.

I think it's strange how people discuss unfettered capitalism, unfettered decay of morality, and unfettered sexcapades running rampant in our consumerist celebrity culture. I don't hear how we're turning into an unfettered surveillance state where law enforcement has been given a free reign to use force to accomplish....pretty much anything.

And people have been brought up never to question authority. When the head says "jump", you're supposed to say "how high?" To question authority is to play the outcast and is bad for one's career (I might know a bit about that).

So, we have a system that lures people in to believing that a politician has a nice smile, is "one of us" because "yes we can", somebody we can have a beer with, somebody who is something to everybody, and gives audiences everywhere a giant spectacle, leading people away from looking at what is really going on. Drone attacks, NSA wire-tapping, being held as a suspected terrorist without due process, the expansion of the surveillance state...

Maybe I need to have a New Year's Resolution of being more ****ed off in 2014. Or hoping for a real zombie apocalypse. This caricature of mindless human zombies who do nothing but consume, consume, consume is not as fun as a real apocalypse.

Just be prepared to rein your self in if you find yourself doing any of the following:
- Yelling at kids "Get off me lawn!"
- Driving with a hat on
- Calling young'ns "whippersnappers"
- Using the word "young'ns"

No worries. Not doing that. Yet. :D

I'm finding this blurring of the lines between entertainment that is steeped into a scripted reality, where people apply to be watched by constant surveillance, and this same use of cameras being used for "security" purposes.

Here's another thing that I get riled up about. Cameras that "catch" you running a red light or rolling through a stop sign. All they catch is a license plate. Not you. But that doesn't matter. Even if somebody else is driving your car. And all you have to do is send a chunk of change to the city court to pay the fine for your "violation."
