It's not a sin, in fact Ásatrú has no concept of sin. However, the Hávamál, the sayings and teachings of Odin, warn against the effects of alcohol if one is not careful in how much one drinks.

It isn't a sin unless I drink.
Alcoholism runs rampant in both sides of my family. The disease killed my mother and father and all 5 of my fathers
brothers.
It nearly killed me.
Drinking isn't a sin in any Christian denominations that I am aware of.
Drunkeness, however, is a sin.

I'd say in moderation, consuming alcohol shouldn't be considered a 'sin.' But, then again, I don't subscribe to the 'sin' line of thinking anymore. Having said that, if something you're doing impairs your good judgment, you should stop doing it. No matter what that might be. In Islam, one shouldn't be consuming alcohol before prayer. That seems reasonable considering one should be in a sober state of mind if one is about to pray.

Ecclesiastes 9:7
7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.

Psalms 104:14-15
14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth food from the earth
15 and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to nstrengthen man’s heart.

Isaiah 55:1
55 Ho, every thirsty one, come ye to the waters, And he who hath no money, Come ye, buy and eat, yea, come, buy Without money and without price, wine and milk.

Matthew 11:19 ;
The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is proved right by her deeds."

First, you must get past the idea that 'sin' itself exist. Actually, this generally comes third or second. First, you must define what scriptures you consider authoritative? Are you jewish, christian, muslim, buddist, etc? The answer is different for each of these?

Could I instead ask you, what is a more productive concept? Sin? I.e. will you god ignore or condemn it? Or humanism? Will your behavior have a positive or negative effect on YOU? Your Family? Your Friends? You Neighbors? The world?

Secondly may I ask, If you find asking about the best/most good of your behavior in this world conflicts with what your god accepts/rejects, then what kind of god are you thinking about? Is that god worthy of consideration?

Especially if this world is a test? Wouldn't you think your god might be able to divide a test that resulting in doing the most good for here and now rather than arbitrary criteria that moved you to the next step?

In Islam I believe yes it is a sin. In Islamic heritage is it also called the Mother of Sins. I believe it is called so because it alone has the high potential to open doors to all other sins including rape, murder, and theft, not to mention different mischief like car accidents and inappropriate behaviors.

I don't think it's a sin. It's a bloody god send. Nah, if it hurts you or other people, then you might want to back off the stuff for health's sake. But in moderation, ehhh go for it.

I find it reasonable to generelize it as a sin. Although some people are surely able to handle alcohol, our society would be better off without it.
It is good as a medicine, we shouldn't stop producing it, but what good is there in alcohol? It helps against social anxiety, but there are other ways to fix such a problem. It is fun, but there are other ways to have fun. Most of the time a drunk is completely disgusting, bad mannered, aggressive and a michief maker. (From what I see in german streets at night) even if 1 of 100 people completely change into a bad person, when drunk, that's enough to ban it. There is also the thing, that we could fight world hunger with the money spent on alcohol induced deseases, if there was no alcohol.

But banning alcohol won't work. They will produce it illegally and make it even worse. We should teach our kids that alcohol is bad, they will teach their kids, and sometime maybe it will be very rarely used.

Being mastered by (becoming addicted to) any substance is the sin.
Moderate, responsible use of alcohol is perfectly fine, and approved in Scripture.
And I believe that occasionally being drunk, recreationally or as a stress relief, is not a sin.
But becoming a drunk (alcoholic) is.

It follows that if you are not able to drink without becoming an alcoholic, as in the case of addictive personalities or a genetic weakness, you should abstain. However, I'm 60, and have been drinking moderately and responsibly all my adult life, so for me, it's proven to be safe and even beneficial, provided I continue to exercise good judgement.

This line of thinking was inspired by Martin Luther's famous sermon on the subject.

I don't know. Just telling kids something is taboo or bad often isn't good enough.
Looking at you failed in school anti smoking campaign.

Also there seems to be a study every few years that indicates that a few red wines is beneficial for overall health.

Teach them why it may be bad, teach them what responsible drinking looks like might be a better way to go about it.

What worries me when it comes to moderation in this subject is that to me alcohol seems to be potentially harmful by nature that even with the concept of moderation we keep hearing, seeing and actually living serious problems still happen because of alcohol. If we take moderation into consideration (jeez, now I'm rhyming) to non alcoholic drinks, we find that they are either good by nature or harmful only on the long run and not close the bad compared to alcohol.

Please don't get me wrong. I not against anyone's free will in drinking and I completely respect you whither you drink or even swim in it :D. I'm just convinced in what's behind having it put as sin to the views seeing it so.
