Is drinking alcohol sin?

What worries me when it comes to moderation in this subject is that to me alcohol seems to be potentially harmful by nature that even with the concept of moderation we keep hearing, seeing and actually living serious problems still happen because of alcohol. If we take moderation into consideration (jeez, now I'm rhyming) to non alcoholic drinks, we find that they are either good by nature or harmful only on the long run and not close the bad compared to alcohol.

Please don't get me wrong. I not against anyone's free will in drinking and I completely respect you whither you drink or even swim in it :D. I'm just convinced in what's behind having it put as sin to the views seeing it so.

Everything is potentially harmful. And a glass of wine may be beneficial to one's health. 7 Health Benefits Of Drinking Alcohol
No one says that about Cigarettes, now do they?

Of course drinking can cause many many problems with health. If you drink copious amounts or drink heavily every day/most days. But both of those are extremes. And it's the extremes that gets you, really. Too much water and you drown. Too little salt and you die. Too much sun, skin cancer. Hell even too much oxygen can be a bad thing. Very well said, I don't disagree on the way you're putting it. It is just that I'm struggling to see that everything else is potentially harmful by nature. I see that all that extremely drinking water, orange juice, milk... etc., could do it giving a stomach ache, indigestion or heartburn, and only after a considerable time and usually it even does not really bother at all. Alcohol on the other hand as it may be beneficial, I still cannot see it is beneficial by nature. and the results of not moderating it has the potential of turning sane good people into something unspeakable, which makes me worried for myself, my children, family, friends and community.

I believe that oxygen and other consumables can be harmful in exceptional cases not by nature, and forbidding it is not/might not be feasible.

The Islamic way, mind you, allows alcohol should necessity presents itself. Muslim countries don't mind using it for medical purposes if they have to. It is not that some beliefs has it as a sin just to get under our skin :)

Drinking too much water will kill you, it won't give you a stomach ache, you will flat out die. There's much more in our regular drinking water than just H2O (depending on your geographical location of course.) It usually has chlorine and fluoride. Too much orange juice has the potential to give you a form of diabetes! Because of the sugar. That's a hell of a lot worse than heartburn or indigestion. Of course you'd have to drink a hell of a lot, but still the potential is there.

Turn sane people into something unspeakable? Now coming from a family of teachers, I know a hell of a lot of drunks. I know a lot of scary drunks. But I also know a lot of happy funny drunks. Not every drunk is a screaming loon, some are no worse than a stoned hippie. It depends on the person. If one has an addictive personality they should abstain from a lot of things, not just alcohol. For those who use it as a irregular stress relief (common in jobs working with the public, trust me) or as a social thing or whatever and they drink responsibly, it's not a big deal unless you yourself make it one.

Also FYI stuff like Brandy, Scotch and Whiskey have been used for centuries as cold remedies. Hell whenever I got sick as a kid (and it wasn't bad enough for antibiotics) my dad would give me a tot of French Brandy and it always fixed me right up.

But again, I stress, this is individualistic. The affects of alcohol differ greatly amongst people, but the unhealthiest drinking habits (especially amongst youth) tends to correlate with societies/cultures which place a high taboo on alcohol in general.

Outside of Islam you're not likely to find alcohol in itself considered to be the problem. The problem is that alcohol makes doing other problematic things much easier. In Buddhism, for example, the precept against intoxication is called the "guardian precept,' since it helps one not to break the others.

Once again, very well put. Thank you for sharing :)

According to my religion, Islam, it is a sin...a big sin to be precise

{You who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination of Satan's handiwork. Eschew such abomination, that you may prosper. Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer; will you not then abstain?} (Al-Ma'idah 5:90-91)

You know, you seem to be a very polite bloke. Good on ya, as we say in Aus.
Thank you, kind Sir.
This is how debates should be; if a side is not convinced, the other should respect that and go on with their normal lives closing the case in a decent way.
Bless you :)

well don't they wipe you or stone you if you drink alcohol ??.

There is no stoning for drinking alcohol. As for lashing, it does happen only under drinking alcohol publicly in a Muslim country that is ruled by Islamic law. The majority of Muslim states are secular and do not rule by Islamic law
