Is God a Woman?

Setting aside gender archetypes this question becomes strange to contemplate if you wonder if God has a penis (what's his shoe size) or a vagina and breasts (implants or not). Still not as strange as trying to visualize a literal reading of Theosophy by Hesiod.

Question Everything
I believe in multiple Gods - both a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother... I have posted before, for those who did not read it, here is a cut-n-paste...

Gen 1:26 ...Let us make mankind in our image, after our likeness.... male and female

292
3...In the heav’ns are parents single?
No, the thought makes reason stare!
Truth is reason; truth eternal
Tells me I’ve a mother there.
4. When I leave this frail existence,
When I lay this mortal by,
Father, Mother, may I meet you
In your royal courts on high?
Then, at length, when I’ve completed
All you sent me forth to do,
With your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.

Question Everything
The rest is THEORY!!!!

I was reading The Apocalypse of Adam - Nag Hammadi Codex

The revelation which Adam taught his son Seth in the seven hundredth year, saying, Listen to my words, my son Seth. When God had created me out of the earth along with Eve, your mother, I went about with her in a glory which she had seen in the Aeon from which we had come forth. She taught me a word of knowledge of the eternal God. And we resembled the great angels, for we were higher than the God who had created us and the powers with him, whom we did not know.
Then God, the ruler of the Aeons and the powers, divided us in wrath. Then we became two Aeons. And the glory in our hearts left us , me and your mother Eve, along with the first knowledge that breathed within us. And glory fled from us; not from this Aeon from which we had come forth, I and Eve your mother. But knowledge entered into the seed of great Aeons. For this reason I myself have called you by the name of that man who is the seed of the great generation or from whom it comes. After those days the eternal knowledge of the God of truth withdrew from me and your mother Eve. Since that time we learned about dead things, like men. Then we recognized the God who had created us. For we were not strangers to his powers. And we served him in fear and slavery. And after these events we became darkened in our hearts. Now I slept in the thought of my heart.

I sometimes think that the tree of “life” and tree of knowledge were not trees, but were in fact the Mother of all living. That She was hidden from us after an incident in Eden. Just as Heavenly Father walked with Adam in the garden of Eden, Heavenly Mother was there walking around too. That the fall was over a conversation on a topic not meant to be discussed. I will not discuss it in full either, just to hint that we are accountable for what we know. Some things we can only learn through experience, and it is best to gain these experiences in ignorance, rather than willfully experienced… merciful ignorance given with the veil.

In any event, our Mother was hidden (cherubim’s guard the tree etc.), but not erased.
Proverbs 2:
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

I think this might be telling us to search out our Heavenly Mother.

Finding Her…
Just as there are many descriptive names for Heavenly Father, There are many names for Her. Names I believe She goes by: tree of life, wisdom, charity, hope, etc… those concepts that are given feminine attributes, referred to as “her” and “she” …

tree of life, “wisdom, and understanding”
Prov 3:
13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

charity, hope, mercy, I won’t post all the scripts…
1 Cor 12:
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Moroni 7: 46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all…
The greatest of all –

on the same level as Heavenly Father? – as men and women are equally endowed…

Along with “cleaving” husband / wife relationship,
I think She is the “Love of God”. His beloved and cherished wife.
I believe She is the “pure love” of Christ, “pure love” being the love between a mother and Her son.
1 Nephi 11:
And I looked and beheld a tree; and it was like unto the tree which my father had seen; and the beauty thereof was far beyond, yea, exceeding of all beauty; and the whiteness thereof did exceed the whiteness of the driven snow.
…. I behold thou hast shown unto me the tree which is precious above all.
16 And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God?
18… Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh.
19 And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
20 And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.
21 And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! Knowest thou the meaning of the tree which thy father saw?
22 And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.

Interesting note, the text of 11:18 was changed “the son of” was later added. Originally read “the mother of God”.

another great article on 1 Nephi link

The staff – a representation of the tree of life represents Her.
Look up the 101 scripts with staff. The staff is the shepherds constant companion, his support, his help meet. The staff aids him in finding lost sheep, to fight off predators, his strength when he grows weary.
Consider the power behind the staff of Moses, used to soften Pharos heart, then split the Red Sea… the rod used to give “life” to those who had been “bitten by snakes” as in Eden.
8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

Aaron’s rod – from Num CHAPTER 17 - As a test, a rod for each tribe is placed in the tabernacle of witness—Aaron's rod buds and blossoms and brings forth almonds—It is kept as a token against rebels.

Recall that Aaron’s budding rod was one of the objects in the Arc of the Covenant that was guarded by two cherubim’s and veils just as the tree in Eden was hidden with cherubim’s.

Gen 3: 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Look up “ark of covenant” in the scripts, and what this ark symbolizes for Israel.
Ex 26:31 And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:
32 And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of ****tim wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver.
33 And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.

You have all the symbols, pillars of wood, veils, cherubim’s, staff that buds, an alter with two witnesses – like the one we are married over…

“mother” Earth – orbiting the sun.

other symbols: The veils women wear, on their wedding day, long hair, modest dress etc… all stem from Heavenly Mother being hidden and veiled from our view. Recall when Adam and Eve first wore cloths, the same time the Tree of Life or Heavenly Mother was hidden from our presence.

Question Everything
Concerning “mother”, baptism, there is only “one” begotten son, etc…
Two types of mothers, one who is chosen by the child, and physical mother…
Just as Abraham sacrificing Isaac represents Heavenly father sacrificing Jesus, I strongly suspect Sarah, Abraham’s beautiful wife, represents Asherah. The many righteous barren women combined with the polygamy throughout the OT possibly symbolic of Mary, not Asherah, becoming the mother of Their “only” begotten son. The background of the ever so important baptism as being an actual “birth”… a birth respecting the free agency of the “children” in which divine Parents are chosen rather than forced upon a spirit through a physical birth… Also adding to the reason that Jesus was baptized, not to take away sin, or to become a child of Heavenly Father… the words “This is my beloved son” perhaps being spoken by a female voice after Jesus’ baptism…

Appropriate worship:
Abraham worshipped in a grove of trees:
Gen 21:33 And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.

Joseph Smith’s first vision occurred in the “sacred grove”…

And yet, we also have idolatry associated with groves in OT…
Of course inappropriate worship of the beautiful Asherah lead to Her presence being hidden, the commandment of not worshipping images. Ex 19: 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above

Only the high priests allowed into the Holy of Holies, others not virtuous enough killed if they accidentally bumped into the ark…

Fair article:

I appreciate that the LDS acknowledge the existence of Heavenly Mother rather than being a completely male dominated religion. That our Heavenly Home is not a broken home, but one with a Mother and a Father.

sorry so long :(

It's interesting to think about. If God did not have a gender, why was gender created in the first place? Why is sex necessary to produce offspring? Why is it important?

Sex isn't necessary to produce offspring; there are plenty of organisms that produce either by division or by parthenogenesis. However, sex is necessary for genetic variation of progeny and consequently for evolution of species.

I see no reason to assume that God would have chromosomes at all so the gender issue is rather silly. The fact that God is presupposed to be male reflects the fact that the scribes and priests who wrote about God fashioned him in their own image.

I have heard of this view, but I have never really understood it. Is there anyone that believes that God is a woman that can explain the rationale behind this belief?

Simply - because people have thought about God and decided different things about It

It is a provider, and gave us a home, and taught us how to go camping etc etc etc - therefore it is Male
It gives us warmth and love and bakes us cookies etc etc etc - therefore it is Female

To my mind, god is neither male, nor female. God is simply That Which Is.

Your post just reminded me of the poigniant lonliness at the end of Edward Scissorhands. (not to say that he was omnipotent or omniscient or whatever)

GOD created first ADAM - the first MAN - of earth. Then, He created the Woman from Adam. Woman is a fleshly gender denoting a being which can procreate and can produce milk. GOD the Father is a Spirit. There is no such thing as GOD the mother, LOL. The prayer of the Roman Catholic members which says "Holy Mary Mother of God.." was never taught by early Christians.

God is a transexual. There, the argument has been resolved rather easily. I am just having a hard time deciding whether he is a male to female, or a female to male. I haven't quite figured that one out yet..

As it is now, I can see beauty in women and never saw beauty in a man.
In my case I would want God to be a woman.

rational would be genderless as genders are there to remove fluids and to make ofsprings, both things God does not need.

god has been a man for sooooooo long now.
its about time god was a woman!

:p i agree with many that god is the whole, and therefore embodies both, while being neither.

From a Sumerian perspective, every annunaki god had a femele varient, The Grand Father Anu whom created Heaven and Earth, his female varient was Antu. From the beginning Anu-antu created Heaven"enlil" and Earth"enki".

The Female Varient of Enki "earthgod" is Ninki and the Male Varient of Enlil "sky god" is "Ninlil".

From a Perspective Ninki would be the Earth Mother godess who Assists Enki in creating Adam.

(Genesis 1: 24) Let the "earth" bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so - Earth=Enki-ninki
In Sumerian Enki's kingdom was called Erida, Erida=Edan

The word Enki was later changed to EA, e-a = eh'yeh = yehwah.
and the word Enlil was later changed into ellil, then shortened to El thus the same as Elohim and Allah

Yes! This is the Supreme Goddess, Radharani! She is the Queen of all, the Mother of all, the Source of All Incarnations. When we chant:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Hara (Hare is vocative)refers to the Energy of the Supreme Lord, and the Energy is the manifestation of Sri Radhika, Radharani. Thus, the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra is also a prayer to the Supreme Goddess to engage us in Her service.

God is the epitome of love, and manifests Emself as Radharani and Krishna, and this Divine Couple is the Esoteric Essence of Love of God.

“(Therefore) Radha is parama-devata, the supreme goddess, and She is worshipable for everyone. She is the protectress of all, and She is the mother of the entire universe.” - Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi 4.89
