Is God really omnipotent?

If the Abrahamic God is truly all knowing, all powerful, and all benevolent ... (this, i take it, is the mainstream Christian view of God... I'm sorry if I'm misrepresenting other faiths) then how could Satan possibly exist?

Because god is omnipotent in incompetence.

heehee, clever, but i'd have gone with something having to do with ovens... and cupcakes... I'll bet Satan makes the best cupcakes.... He has ideal heating systems you know.

God probably buys the cupcakes from Satan...

And if there is a hell, i'm going there for sure :D

clouds are overrated.
Like i want to be sitting on a cloud with an annoying ring of light above my head (how could I sleep) with a harp.
I mean a harp. Come on, at least give me a bagpipe or something vaguely irritating

At least in hell we'll have the good music :)

I cant even imagine a crossharp.... interesting... but not quite OP material...
True, but maybe in heaven I'll be able to get it to work. Hehehe. I can imagine raining crossharp bolts of death over the world.
Anyhow, back to the OP.
God is incompetent.

What so special about Satan? Just another fallen angel.... not so special assuming there is a God.

Assuming there is a God, an "evil" force, or fallen angel, shouldn't be possible, should it?
Seems ok to me... our theology teaches that God is love.... just because Satan chose to reject that love does not detract from God... there is no such thing as an "evil force" --- only the absence of God/love.

Perhaps God is so powerful that he can create an ultimately evil being whilst also managing to be all loving and all knowing.

I think it is more likely that the belief that God is omnipotent is simply a perversion of the original text. If one doesn't think about it in much depth then there does seem to be little difference between the most powerful being in the universe and a being which is perfectly powerful. I think it more likely that God, at least originally, was viewed as the former and it was only through approximation or perhaps exaggeration that he attained his present attributes.

Assuming there is free will, there will always be the possibility of evil. If there are rebellious angels and God has chosen to allow their continued existence, would we therefore have to assume He is powerless against His own creatures? I doubt it. The question should be, what use do they serve.

I love your perspective. It's a shame other Christians I know don't feel the same!

Freedom of expression
Somebody has gotten to read the Nietzsche´s books "Beyond Good and Evil " and " On the Genealogy of Morality "? I think that these books can help to clarify ideas of some people. But it is not honest, to criticize it if it is not read.

I don't see the existence of Satan as an issue myself. After all, if humans were supposedly given free will to choose their fate, then why not his angels too? Although I struggle with understanding the point of giving people free will in the first place from a deity's point of view.

I think more important is the question: if God is omniscient and omnipotent at the same time, then can he pose a question he himself cannot answer?

Becaue without an adversary there would not be a motivated cause.

Satan doesn't exist, apart from our own selfish passions and lower natures, which prevent us from seeing the interconnectedness of all Life. Like Scott1 mentioned, coldness is simply lack of Heat, darkness is simply absence of Light.

This is from the account of the near-death experience of a young boy:
I asked if there was a Devil or Satan.

He said to me, "Would God allow that?"

He continued, "If I made you God for just a few seconds, what would you do first?"

I knew my first act would be to eliminate any Devil or Satan.

I asked, "How do I know right from wrong?"

He replied, "Right is helping and being kind. Wrong is not only hurting someone but not helping when you can."
