Is God truly a good guy ?

InChrist

Free4ever
i.e., He doesn't even smoke!

Actually, I believe the scriptures say He does, but it must definitely be holy smoke.

“Then the earth shook and trembled;
The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken,
Because He was angry.
Smoke went up from His nostrils,
And devouring fire from His mouth;
Coals were kindled by it.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down
With darkness under His feet. 2 Samuel 22:8-10

I would like to pose the question of whether or not God can be considered good or not. How he has been depicted in the bible, qua-ran and the old testament dose it come off that he's the bad guy ?

Take for example the story of Adam and Eve,dose getting angry at them for consuming the forbidden fruit and kicking them out of Eden make much sense ? What of the story of job ? Why let Ha-Satan mess with job and do nothing for him?

Funny, you use examples from Judaism to question a "good God" when Judaism teaches God is jealous and vengeful.

Creating something doesn't mean you are part of the creation rather the creation is part of the creator.

He didn't just kick them out. He placed a curse on them that caused them to die, have pain in childbirth (women), cursed the ground to become uninhabitable to food ( leading to mass starvation), and cut off all legs that snakes once had (apparently), but wait....He didn't do it to just Adam and Eve he went ahead and cursed the entire earth and all future generations of people forever and ever...and he did it after one mistake. Apparently God is the strictest parent ever.

Now, for a second, lets pretend God isnt all powerful, isn't this mysterious being who can control our future destinies and whether we live the rest of our lives in torment or glory forever. Lets throw all the things that cause people to glorify this being so and lets just focus on him as a moral or immoral being.

Lets say Gods name was Eli. Eli lives down the road, but no one really knows much of anything about him. One day Eli is arrested for causing all of his children to die, he began poisoning all the water in the city to ensure that food wouldnt grow so that everyone would starve to death. He started beating women horridly. When asked why he did all of this he replied, "My son was disobedient." If you aren't completely insane then there is no way you would justify this kind of behavior. However Eli turns out to be a super human from another planet and can easily destroy the planet. So people slowly begin to follow Eli, because they feel they have no other choice or they are afraid. Suddenly people begin to justify Eli as being right because Eli is watching them at all times. Eli promises if people don't follow him and trust in him that he will damn their eternal souls forever and people believe him because of his past acts of power. Slowly the entire world begins to follow Eli. They all justify his deeds when questioned about morality by claiming he is above morality and he alone decides what is moral. Eli is now considered a moral agent, he even begins sacrificing his sons to prove his love for us. The world praises Eli, and he reigns supreme.

The only thing I would ask is to take notice of your attitude of Eli before he was thought to be powerful and after. I don't honestly think people would claim God to be a moral being. He is removed of all moral obligation because he is above it for some reason. People claim our morality isn't Gods morality, yet God supposedly also wrote morality on our hearts. So his morality must be similar to ours. It makes no sense why God would behave in a way he knew would appear immoral to us anyways. What kind of sick being does that? Appear to be immoral to people who you wrote morality for? Why?

I find God a monster. I think only fear, weakness, selfishness, and wishful thinking could cause someone to believe anything else.

I have no idea. The God that I'm more familiar with, the God of the Upanishads, the Gita, the Guru Granth, etc. doesn't seem like a bad Person at all! ;)

In the Hindu religion, God is considered Love, Truth, Affection, etc. He is ultimately beyond both good and evil, as they pertain mainly in our thoughts and understanding, and certainly not His.

The apparent stories in our Scriptures are merely lila, or 'play' of God - these pastimes generally have deeper, spiritual meanings to teach us virtue or a lesson of ethical living.

Good job editing out the adolescent ad hominem.

An ad hominem would be me attacking the OPs character instead of answering his question. I actually answered his question and posed no attack on him at all. However calling my argument out as "adolescent" without actually putting forth anything of substance would be closer to an actual ad hominem.

Also, I didn't edit that out and will ignore any future posts of yours that hold no substance since I have seen a pattern forming with you vs other posters where you simply say nothing substantial.

Actually, I was only referring to your original last sentence - the one you chose to delete - and not your "adolescent" argument. Sorry you got confused. :)

I would be most interested in learning about the scales being used by the various thread posters.

Seems the two most dominate scales thus far are:

  1. Everything god does is good, period. end of story.
  2. If god does even one thing I consider bad, or dislike, then he cannot be a good guy.

Of course God is a 'good guy' the granter of eternal life, the keeper of the Christian and Muslim 'Heaven' for believers the creator of the universe and all life and matter.
God did not create 'evil'...humans did...with their free will...a gift from God that allows them to chose to do either 'good' or 'evil'. It's the only way real children learn.
God did not create lying, or betrayl, greed, war, violence, poverty etc. etc.....HUMANS...created all of that....and whatever faith Christian, Hindu, Jew or Muslim....God's been trying to get them to choose to stop it ever since.

Most of us are misrepresenting God with our wicked deeds especially killing each other at war.

"Vengeance of Mine" says God. God's followers have no business killing each other using His name.

I agree way absolutley...so many are misundersanding God....
'No' religion has ever said.....God is a magic 'genie' supposed to fly down here, fix everything the humans mess up, do it for them, and make life on earth a paradise for them by miracle.....
Instead...God so loved his children he gave them the earth and dominion over it and all things that live and grow on it.......and....gave humans the gift of free will to do good or bad...(I guess he could have made us android puppets only capable of good)...but who would do that to their children?
God for believers even interevened to instruct us...through Jesus, Moses, Mohammahd, Budha, prophets etc....love thy brother as thyself, respect your elder brothers and sisters in the book, be not cruel, share your wealth, don't be rich, don't be greedy, do not kill, do not steal etc. etc.
And what do the humans do?.....Ignore basically everything....ruin the world...ruin the environemt, slaughter/ murder/kill each other, allow starvation and disease, refuse to make the rich share with the poor/ be lazy/ be greedy....and then they blame 'God' for evil....lol!
And still God in almost all faiths holds out eternal life after death, heaven, etc. forgiveness...for 10,000 years of mostly **** poor human performance and human failure on earh...It just kills me when people try to say God is the 'bad guy'...Humanity should look in the mirror to see the 'bad guy'.

I think Jesus is the only one who teaches to "love your enemy", friend. And most Christians advocate killing at war.
