Yes and no. Life is the same value, but to survive, life must be taken as well as preserved.

It's the way nature works.

Not per se. It is mostly related to empathy. I feel little empathy for mosquistoes, for example. And curiously, or maybe not, I am actually far more likely to feel empathy for a random dog than for a random human.
