Is(n't) Rap dead yet?

What do you think will be the next wave to replace "Rap"? And how long will it take to arrive? No, really, I mean, need to know. Will Rap survive as long (haha) as Disco? Will it be dying any time soon? Real soon?

cRap has already outlived disco by a long shot, Patty. After hearing BouncingBall's thread about Drums and Bass, I am not especially keen on the next wave.

I don't know about the USA and Canada, but in the urban areas of England it seems to be "Indie" that's in at the moment.

Hip-hop is underground. Lots of political rappers full of satire and social commentary right now.. I really enjoy the emerging lyricism.

I certainly expect another musical genre to rise up an overtake rap as the new hip thing. But I think that rap and hip-hop have probably become well enough entrenched that they will persist being relatively popular after this happens.

dust1n - Any good suggestions from those? I used to hate this genre, but I've come to like it more through the avenue of 'nerdcore'.

Rap's been around for 30 years. It would be gone by now if it were going to disappear. There were a whole bunch of popular rappers by the early 80s.

Sage Francis (social, political, religious commentary), busdriver (extremely fast social, economical, political commentary), Aesop Rock (..he's got his own thing going), Immortal Technique (really, really hates neo-colonialism, globalization, racism, capitalism), Dead Prez (old-school socialists)

You can find them all on grooveshark.com if you want to listen...

I think we have entered a state of hyper culture. As the internet expands, so does the ability for people to put it on the internet, and download, and stream. People can take in so much, people have created so many genres. It was just be larger minorities. At this point, all music will live, and basically near all infinite possibilities to explore will be categorized.. available.

I don't understand how a genre where every single "artist" sounds exactly the same and who all "rap" about the exact same pretentious and shallow materialistic and misogynistic drivel can appeal to anyone. Not to mention the deliberate butchering of the language.

Then your exposure to the many different genres and sub-genres of rap has been extremely limited. There are some amazing artists out there.

I have a fondness for rap ..

I like Tupac Shikir ..and others ..

One time I was really angry and Em and Em gave me that song "you dont know how sick you make me"

And it made me laugh..(the sound affects were him throwing up in a bucket LOL)).

That's just popular rap, and it's true for any popular music.

Rap is an art form and a wonderful example of expression.

For some reason, every time you post, I can't help put your avatar as your face. In which I think you are always laughing after everything you say, making all your posts a lot more sarcastic.

death metal will probably be the next thing on the radio...

I can just imagine church ladies, drinking tea, eating cucumber sandwiches, listenign to Thora Herd on the wireless... while watching a death metal video on Panorama...

Black/death metal is the common underground music, that rap once was....
