Is the KJO movement a cult?

YeshuaRedeemed

Revelation 3:10
KJO stands for King James Only. I was part of this movement until I realized that modern translations can be more accurate and easy to read of they are properly translated. Elevating a certain Bible translation as saying it is the only true Bible is a no true Scotsman fallacy on all the others. If you are going to share the Bible, select a translation that is properly translated, easy to read, and enjoyable, and worship Jesus as the Source of your Salvation, but a translation. Have one literal, one moderate, and one translation for children or beginners, and mix it up. God understands.

I used to know some people that believed KJO. Although I disagree with them; I would not call them a cult. That's one of those non-salvation issues. If it works for them then it's okay with me.

Fair enough. You make a good point. I guess I am just angry with myself for going for it.

They do exhibit cult like behavior but without the power to enforce it they don't quite qualify as a cult.

What I have found is that they sometime mistranslate the KJV to support their own prejudices. That is not quite so easy with a more modern translation.

We all need to understand that, unless we’re reading Greek or Hebrew, we’re reading a translation. Translations ALWAYS involve some fudging, in order to account for language barriers, colloquialisms, and outdated figures of speech that need to be made understandable. Nothing in a translation is pure or exact, although a translation can adequately give us the gist of meaning that is faithful to the original.

I would say it has some cult features, but it is not a full blown cult. These churches tend to be:
  • Elitist mentality: we are the enlightened ones
  • Polarization: we are the innies and everyone else is the outies
  • Zealous and unquestioning of their leadership
  • Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged (even socially punished)
  • Lack of intellectual honesty
  • There are often other cult red flags, but it varies from church to church.

Rather than label them a cult, I would simply say they are toxic churches.
