I do believe there are areas and cases whereas having more guns in some private hands may be an "evil necessity".

I live near Detroit most of the year, but I simply do not allow any guns in our house. And local and state police here in Michigan, along with the FBI, do say that guns should be highly restricted. Unfortunately, the NRA-bought Republicans here in the state go against their recommendations and also against common sense.
I don't want to turn this into a gun debate. But fighting crime is a very personal decision- either you empower your local state authorities to do it effectively, or you give yourself the tools to deal with the spillover, when it comes into your neighborhood or invaded into your home.

Detroit will continue to be full of crime until the crime is eradicated. No one's going to flip a switch overnight and make the area magically prosperous again. Radical Islam in the West seems to be an even bigger problem.

The question is how best to do it, and every officer I brought into my poly-sci classes said to call 911 and do not attempt to engage anyone who may be in your home illegally.

The best "medicine" is preventative, and there's much a homeowner can do to protect their home and themselves w/o the need of guns in the home.

And average response time here is 30 minutes depending on the time of day. It gets to point where defending yourself and your home after you call 911 is the best bet.

Where the problem comes in is several fold, namely that there's a greater chance of you accidentally shooting an innocent person, or that the burglar has to shoot you for his self-defense, or there's a family dispute and someone gets the gun, or someone commits suicide, etc.

One of my cousins was a Detroit officer and also lived in Detroit, but when he came home from work, he took the shells out of his gun, put them in a safe, then took his gun and put that in a lock-box chained to a large bookshelf in the basement. He saw way too many examples of what keeping a loaded gun in a house can do.

Anyhow, I guess we all make our choices.

Give me the UK any day when compared to the US.
Much more chance of being killed by some mad gunman in the US than a mad jihadist in London.
There is more chance of you being killed on the road in a road traffic accident than a terrorist attack.
I work in Manchester, often visit London, I'm off for a meal in Manchester this weekend.
The UK is safe.
