Is War Good, Useful, Necessary or Unavoidable?

Maybe that is part of the problem? You have a hammer and look at every problem as a nail.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

We are responsible for everything that is within our control. We are responsible for our own choices. We have a moral obligation to use the resources available to us in the ways that we think are right. I don't see how this is like having a hammer and looking at every problem as a nail.

I am not saying that military action is easily justified in reality. I am not saying that military action should be our response to everything. I am giving the criteria upon which I judge all ethical choices.

Don't you think you already violated that principle if you have a military bigger than necessary to defend your country?

I will preface this by saying that I am not a nationalist. I don't think it would be realistic to assume that my own country is the only one that would ever need to defend itself.

However, you do raise an interesting question. A large military requires a great deal of resources. Could those resources be put to better use elsewhere? I think in a lot of cases the answer is yes and so I can see how too big of a military would be unethical.

I don't know if that is always going to be the case, though. It depends on a lot of complex factors that I'm probably not qualified to evaluate well. Certainly, if I was making such large decisions I would want a board of expert advisers to help keep me informed.

It also puts you into the position to think about using it for anything other than defence. (I.e. the position of having a hammer and searching for nails.)
But independent of the unethical way you got into the position of deciding to attack an other country for "ethical" reasons, you also have to question yourself whether you want to grant that right to other players who might have other moral principles. If your country isn't fairing that well on human rights at the moment, would you want to be attacked by your neighbour who is just helping you to be more moral? Or, in other words, is your attack war justifiable by the Golden Rule?

I think it is every person's teleological purpose to contribute to the general welfare of humanity. As such, I do not agree that the purpose of a military is for defence. I think the purpose of a military is to contribute to the general welfare of humanity.

Unethical according to which system of ethics?

I am willing to sacrifice my life for the greater good, yes. I have already risked death to save the lives of other people a few times, expecting to not survive.

However, it is true that I might think somebody is wrong to think that their actions are serving the greater good. On those grounds, I wouldn't even support unethical actions that do not directly affect me.

That said, I think the Golden Rule is unethical and it is not a heuristic that I hold myself to.

How'd that work out in history?

Unethical according to which system of ethics?
Exactly. You'd have to be so arrogant as to assume that only you have the right system of ethics.

OK, now that we have established your superiority complex, how do you argue that to be moral or even only ethical?

Is war necessary?

Greedy rich men in trade say its business.

The means is always to end someone's human rights to live naturally freely and in community.

An answer we all knew. Humanity said many years ago enough fighting for false reasons. We share life as the same human. Stop greed.

Stop the imbalanced dis spirited choices.

By Uniting as family only.

Families share life by conditions wise caregiver nurturing life.

As we lost the basic how to be a family school should reintroduce how to be as a family first.

Once it was learnt schooled naturally.

Removed by many organised social problems. A non need for mutual lived equality.

A baby.
A child.
A teenager.
An adult
A chosen parent.
A wise loving elder parent.

The right to live a whole human experience.

War was taught as unnatural evilly chosen and by evil leadership.

If it was unavoidable then why bother expressing world community forum questions if the leaders won't change their leadership ideas?

To be a leader we taught was to be spiritually led only.
