Isis Bookstore Vandalized

When you read the three letters "Isis," what is the first thing that comes to mind for you nowadays? Be honest.

Since the terrorist organization known by various names has been in the headlines a lot lately, it is extremely unfortunate that the most popular term to refer to this group has become the
acronym "ISIS." Why, do you ask? Because Isis is the name of an Egyptian goddess, honored and worshipped today by a fair number of contemporary Pagans. One of the more well-known Pagan supply shops uses the name of the goddess for their business, and while Pagan business are sadly no strangers to vandalism and hate crimes, it's even worse when it's because our sacred things get conflated with terrorist organizations. As the Wild Hunt covered:

Isis Bookstore Vandalized

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Over the past weekend, Isis Books and Gifts was vandalized for the fourth time in the past year. In this recent incident, a brick was thrown through the lower portion of the sign.

The book store owner, Karen Charboneau-Harrison, doesn’t know who did this. However, the reason itself is not a mystery. The vandalism happened one day after the Beirut and Paris terrorist attacks. She told a local reporter for CNN, “I don’t know if somebody walking down the street just saw our name on the sign and kind of lost it for a moment and threw a rock through it … or if it was an ignorant person who actually thought this was a bookstore for terrorists, I don’t know.”

Although confusion between the store’s name and the terrorist group is causing problems, Charboneau-Harrison has no intention of changing the name. On Facebook, Isis Books posted, “The name Isis is that of the Egyptian Goddess of women, marriage, magick, healing and more. However, with our media and politicians constantly using the word to name those in the Middle East who are the source of such horror, some people seem to get confused. Please help us to educate the media and your family and friends to call the terrorists by a more correct name – Daesh – not Islamic State, not ISIS, not ISIL.”

What do we do about things like this? Can we do anything? My sympathies and support go out to their business, and may they stand firm against the tides of blind bigotry. I've purchased some things from them in the past, and it would be awful for them to go under because of sloppy choice of words on the part of the mass media.

Personally, I think the sign is too damn plain and that is causing the problem. [GALLERY=media, 7184]Jr117-5df1083a-e8dd-43c3-9cdb-00de34924f73-v2 by Mindmaster posted Nov 19, 2015 at 6:04 PM[/GALLERY] Put that pretty lady on the sign and no problem.

That there are four letters in ISIS.

:)
Seriously, I don't think there is anything you can feasibly do about idiots vandalising. If she had a bookstore in Cairo named USA Books and Gifts she'd have a similar problem.

They could put up a sign in the window saying "We're not the terrorist group you ****ing wankers!". That might help.

On a serious note, I despair at the level of stupidity exhibited here. In the age of information ignorance of this level is no defence. They could have Googled it or, heaven forbid, gone into the shop and asked about the name.

**** sake.

If noboby knows why it happened then it's all assumption.
100,000 people saw the sign. 99,999 of them ignored it or even went in to shop. It's the 1 who threw the brick that matters. But for all anybody knows the perp may think it's a devil worshipping pagan place.
We just don't really know.

Ironic.

A book store = education and information.

A dimwit vandal = A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

It's unfortunate that the name in general of Isis is taking a lot of unfair heat, to the point Coke even quit printing the name on the bottles that have a name. It saddens me that because of a few sick ****s that the goddess Isis may go the way of the swastika. :(

I think it reflects the stupidity of America perfectly:

1) "ISIS" calls themselves: ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī 'l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām. ISIS is our convenient and made up news media name for them not what they call themselves. ISIL is a better acronym and more correct, but still not the one we use. (Islamic State of Iraq and Levant)

2) They don't write it in English.. lol... if it was truly on a sign a red-blooded American probably wouldn't know anyway.

3) ISIS was a Goddess four-thousand years before the American media used the word.

The program my work uses happens to use the acronym ISIS. A retail rep was quite appalled. So I think emotions are running high and we need to calm down a bit. Hopefully the person who did this is just someone who can educated rather than a hoodlum or someone just destructive looking for an easy excuse to commit vandalism

I don't think so. There is even American University in Cairo. If we are talking about names, only Israel bookstore would be a target.

I think Egypt was even pro-US a few regimes ago. That's why we didn't bomb them after 9/11, even tho there were Egyptians (but not Iraqis) among the hijackers.

There is really a fat portion of muslims who desire to live like we do in the west. The problem is that there is also a fatty portion of them who wants to live like middle age times due to some reasons for which I am not very sure why.

May God help secular muslims because they are the ones in real trouble.

Modern fundamentalist Islam is actually way worse than medieval Islam. A lot of medieval Muslim states tolerated Christians and Jews and made great advancements in science. But as the Western Christian world liberalized and secularized, the Islamic world fell prey to widespread fundamentalism due to a mixture of reasons involving colonialism, the fall of the Ottomans and the rise of oil as a power source.
