I feel qualified to review this. I'm an American who has lived in Indonesia for many years, and for 7 years was married to an Indonesian Muslim woman. To learn about the religion I married into, I read many books on the subject, and was especially influenced by Karen Armstrong's book "Islam". She influenced my views positively, and encouraged me to see Islam as a badly misunderstood religion, who's roots and original teachings are in general benevolent, friendly to women, and tolerant. I no longer feel that way, and this book helped a great deal to undo the damage I feel Armstrong did to my understanding.
I am surrounded by moderate Muslims, here in Indonesia, and I find the vast majority of them to be extremely kind, tolerant, good people. But the teachings of the Qur'an itself are not the wise, tolerant, enlightened statements that I had been led to believe they are, and this book is an excellent place to begin an understanding what the text actually says, and how it got to be a book in the first place.
Unlike many books in the subject, it is concise, an easy read, simple, and to the point. The author does not bog you down with too many details. It's a must read for anybody who is interested in the subject.
