They were cults because they were new because they started out. They aren't cults anymore. Pretty much every new religion was a cult first. But cults are usually small and don't consist of millions of followers.

Perhaps they call it a cult because they think Islam has a cult-like mentality. A common trait among cults is that if you leave a cult or disobey their rules, you get punished or shunned by them in some way ad that those who leave Islam get shunned, but then I've seen people who left Islam that didn't get shunned so I guess it depends on the culture and branch.
