Islam and Being Homosexual

Rational Agnostic

This is Isis, Daesh, doing this, not muslim countries in general.

According to Wiki, Iran seems to have executed some people for homosexuality, NOT by throwing people off buildings. It seems Somalia may have executed some as well. That seems to be it.

Stop posting misleading and inflammatory garbage.

Well, Islam is clearly the most intolerant and violent religion in the world. Personally, I agree with Richard Dawkins who stated "Islam is the greatest force for evil in the world today."

I read that in Iran, a gender-changing operation is the only official way out of the "crime" of homosexuality, as after a gender-changing operation, a gay man and his formerly male lover can marry and live together as man and "woman" as prescribed by Islam.
Read that where?

Try googling "transsexuality" "gay men" "Iran". It's really not hard. ;)

It is very clear from Islamic sources and recent history that Islam is totally incompatible with Homosexuality. In Iran if convicted after a fair religious trial, you are thrown off tall buildings to a horrible and painful death. You can watch these executions on Youtube. In other Muslim countries your head is chopped off. So how is the religion of peace compatible with 21th century liberal values?

I'm not convinced that Christians would do any better in a Christian theocracy. I've heard more than one self-proclaimed Christian in the US advocate for rounding up all the gays for slaughter. It's simply the fact that most Christians live in secular societies that prevents them from taking such drastic action. If they had the power and authority, I fear that there's quite a few Christians who would do precisely what they do is many Muslim countries.

I suggest putting aside the topic, moving it to a different site such as reddit. There is no debate about Islam's stance. The only thing that can be debated is how to enforce and whether to enforce, and that can't be done on RF as we don't have enough Muslim visitors to bake a cake.

That is the point,Christians do not have the power to execute homosexuals but Islam has. You are correct, there are several groups that advocate physical homosexual bashing.

Thanks. It's on you to provide the source for your claims. Such surgeries are impermissable in Islam, however.

Can you tell us what is wrong with the Islamic view on homosexuality and why it's wrong?
It is always wrong to punish people for what they are by nature. Being tall is no more sinful than being short. Being dark is no more sinful than being fair. Having a congenital defect is no more sinful than having none.

The evidence is in, and has been studied with great thoroughness. Nobody -- not once, not ever -- has demonstrated that a human being has a choice in their sexual orientation. It is possible to fake it, yes, but surely that would be a great wrong to the person that you are faking it on (unless it's a woman, of course, and then of no human value).

The view of Islam, like that of other religions, that homosexuality must be punished denies this knowledge -- thus it is IGNORANT of that knowledge.

And thus it is wrong.

How can a muslim believe that homosexual behaviour is not morally wrong?

What you just said seems consistent with my understanding of Islam. What I'm frequently told my Muslims however, is that Islam infinitely open to interpretation, and hence it cannot be held accountable for anything. I find your answer quite honest and refreshing.

You mean, not any more. Homosexuality was outlawed in many countries with a Christian majority population until the mid 20th century, with e.g. many US states only starting to legalize it in the early 1970s, and some strongly traditionalist Christian countries such as Ireland only decriminalizing homosexual relationships in the 1990s.

The idea of Christian-majority countries being particularly tolerant of homosexuality seems to be largely a post-hoc fabrication, and I would argue frequently motivated by religious nationalism and Islamophobia first and foremost.

You are correct, there are several groups that advocate physical homosexual bashing.
They don't just advocate, apparently.

(I'm still waiting for the OP to give his reasoning, but that may never happen...) No, Islam has no such teaching that homosexuality in itself was either wrong or punishable.
