I listened to a CD called "a rough guide to sufi music" and was greatly moved. Even though I could not understand the words the music made the hair on my neck stand up. Very powerful.
It raised a question in my mind which is what are the musical traditions in Islam?
I have read that it should be encouraged and elsewhere it is forbidden. One would have thought that having being given the gift of music by Allah it would be ones duty to use that skill for the benefit of others.
I watched a program on the BBC recently entitled "Sacred Music" which is a christian perspective on music in the church and its development. It had the same effect on my as the CD of sufi music.
Is sacred music distinct from other genres or is all music encouraged as expression and artistary?
Any suggestions on other CD's of Islamic music gratefully accepted.
