Islam's claim to be peaceful

In the aftermath of 911 a Pakistan official said "People should stop saying Islam isnt a peaceful religion. It could cause people to get violent"

I once saw a quote from an Iman who said "Islam is a peaceful religion, we will kill anyone who says otherwise."

It seems that, historically, the less separation there is between a government and a religion, the less peaceful the religion -- or at least, the less peaceful its clergy.

Of course. That's because they hold all the cards. They don't have to care about how people feel or what people think. They tell the people what to think and woe betide the hide of he who questions their thinking...

"And when they call themselves the good and the just, do not forget that they would be pharisees, if only they had—power."

Christianity has a far bloodier history than Islam in my view. Jewish communities lived within Arab states rather peacefully until 1947, that's when things changed.

Given the uneven history of both Christianity and Islam when it comes to the Jews, it seems a bit problematic to declare one of those religions historically more at peace with Jews than the other. I think the best you can say is that there have been for both religions periods and places in which the Jews were more tolerated than in other periods and places. But that's just my impression.

I don't mean to take sides but I've never heard of a Jew putting a bomb around his waist and blowing himself up in a public place.

Well, I wouldn't advance a claim that a Jew never did that. Usually the religion of these crazies aren't published. However, mainstream Judaism always condemns these actions.
