you have to be blind to not recognize Israel as an Apartheid state IMHO The Gaza residents don't even have electricity and running water most of the time, how is that not an Apartheid from regular Israelis. Its just like Apartheid in South Africa, one set of rules for whites, another much more restrictive set of rules for blacks. In Israel a whole lot of privileges' for Jews, and a whole lot of very restrictive policies for Palestinians

In my opinion, Israel isn't an apartheid state, but it's an apartheid-ish state. It's not quite an apartheid, but a lot of policies of Israel are discriminatory toward its Arab minority and even more so for the Palestinians living in occupied zones.

PS: the idea that AOC is alone in thinking this is the case is of course ridiculous. There are a lot of people and organisation with background in international law, human rights violation who do and they have fairly solid arguments for it.

There are some Israelis what want to "cleanse" the West Bank (and Israel proper) of Palestinians/Muslims. There are some who would like to find the hard and rocky path to brotherhood. The extreme right wing government that is supported by about 1/2 of Israelis encourages the taking of Palestinian land by one means or another.

Apartheid is simply not in Israel's vocabulary as far as I'm concerned, and AOC is the most batty and partisan nutjob Congress person I've ever seen.

Israel is trying to put an end to the hundreds of Qassams that are being deployed on its citizens. The aim is to collapse the tunnel systems being used to move rockets and troops.

The best thing now is to call for an immediate cease fire and get to the table so no one else has to die.

If you read the wikipedia article I have mentionned, you would have learned the accusation started following the Oslo Accord of 1998 when Israel became de facto sovereign over some Palestinian territories in the West Bank. Prior to that, the comparison would not have been apt indeed.

Note that its the BDS movement, created in 2005, that popularised its use. It's an accusation that started over 20 years ago back when AOC was just a little girl.

Notably, it is not an apartheid state because Palestinian Arabs are not second class citizens the way Black South Africans were; they are, in fact, not citizens of Israel at all, but treated as foreign citizens with the same rights in Israel proper as an illegal immigrant in the contemporary US. Since the majority of West Bank territory and all of its major roads are under political and military control of the IDF, the Arab citizens of West Bank are - effectively and legally - foreign citizens in their own home country.

Did AOC blurt out this statement while midway through a meal, spewing half-eaten food at a nearby table of journalists, or do you simply refer to anything a person you politically disagree with says as an "outburst" because you're incapable of imagining people you disagree with behaving in a normal way because that detracts from your obvious mischaracterization of them?

Why would it matter if it was "relatively new"? Why relevance does that have to the truth of the statement?

Think, grasshopper, think! Do not allow your blind, irrational hatred/fear of AOC cloud your judgement. If you must own her, do it with facts, reason and logic. Because, right now, all I'm getting from this whole thread is that (1) you don't like AOC, (2) you are willing to lie - or, at the very least, not bother to do very, very basic reaearch, in order to make AOC seem insane, (3) you don't actually have an argument about whether or not Israel is an apartheid state, you just REALLY know that you don't want to agree with AOC on this particular subject.

Have a drink, take a deep breath, do a bit of light reading, then maybe come back to discuss this complex, political subject with something other than "socialist-adjacent lady bad".
