James Bond: Who's Best/Who's Next?

Until Craig I would have said Connery, but it's Craig now. In part because at this point he's a much better actor and partly because he's been given much better material to work with, mostly. Well, at least twice and those two were all time great. Skyfall is the measure of a Bond film's greatness from here until, who knows?

He's not too long in the tooth to do another and given the critical reception of the latest outing felt more like Quantum of Solaris, or Solstice or whatever the hell that was, I'm thinking he may be wanting to go out on a slightly higher note. If not a few names have been bandied about lately. Damian Lewis has been suggested, though only seriously by the ginger crowd and that's their problem. Hardy? Possible. Idris Elba? That might be shaking the tree harder than some would care for (see: Star Racists) but I think it would be a terrific choice.

Worst imaginable choices?

Tom Cruise (too short and he's already killed one beloved fictional character)
Daniel Day Lewis (too Lewissy)
Shea Lebouf (just...too)
Gerald Butler...seriously, did you think he could act when you saw Timeline? Did you ever think that again?

Sean Connery is the best Bond.
If he had the more modern physicality in his movies, they'd be far & away the best.

Who should be the next one?
I haven't even a clue.

Connery - Best

My pick for next...Ioan Gruffudd
Liked him as Horatio...his recently defunct television series would work against him and he's played into a type now that would make it a tough transition. . .still beats Vin Diesel.

I'd vote Samuel Jackson, if only to see the writers work in the line. . . "I said shaken, not stirred, mother..." maybe the world isn't ready.

I don't like Daniel Craig. He's a bore with no real personality. I actually fell asleep in the theater during Casino Royale and I can barely remember any of the Bond movies he's been in. My favorites are Connery and Brosnan. It would be nice to see Idris Elba as the next Bond.

I really like the idea of Elba as Bond. Before Craig it was Connery...then the first couple by Moore, then I liked Dalton. Wasn't a Brosnan fan, though to be fair he wasn't given much to work with. He had one, Goldeneye, that I really liked. I think Craig's material and approach is just appreciably better than what came before, but I suppose it's one of those subjective things. Idris though, that we agree on.
