Japanese PM apologises for Pearl Harbor

The war finished years ago and that is where it should stay, no party was perfect in the war, it brought the worse out of everyone.

It was an ok speech, but it was indeed not an apology.

I don't know that I would approve of an apology, given the American Embargo Act that arguably forced Japan into conflict, and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I would rather see Obama apologize to Japan for the bombings.

Don't expect an apology nor do I feel one is necessary but we need to remember

Japan's sneak attacked Pearl Harbor was done while having peace talks in Washington and there were civilian casualties at Pearl Harbor.

As far as apologies go Japan still needs to apologize to China for its war crimes it committed before and during the US involvement in the war, that it has yet to admit to, that were right up there with Nazi war crimes.

and there were civilian casualties at Pearl Harbor.

US soldiers
2,403 killed
1,178 wounded

US civilians
68 killed
35 wounded

Absolutely nothing to apologise for. They were clearly not the target of the attack. Otherwise the numbers would be much higher.

Yeah I agree Japan has to talk to the Republic of China about these things.

The Pearl Harbor visit means nothing to me.
What matters is that we've good relations with Japan now.
And I say they make the best go boards in the world.

There's an intrinsic importance in the apologies with the agreement that both sides committed atrocities against each other. There's a lot to be said about having the moral courage to say "I'm sorry".

"Moral courage" to apologize for beating the enemy who attacked us ferrociously?
That sounds like moral failure....an affront to those who gave their lives defending us.
They did no wrong.
What next....should we apologize for crushing the Nazis?
Utterly absurd.

The Japanese were wrong to attack us, to cannibalize & torture the Chinese, to.....you know the list.
We were right to do what we did in WW2.
We may sympathize with them about the destruction wrought against each other.
But we owe them no apology, nor is one even needed for good relations.

Pearl harbor attack.
There were 2403 total American deaths, 68 civilians and 2335 military.
The atrocities committed by the Japanese against the Chinese gets
little press.
Google Japanese war crimes against Chinese civilians.
Medical "experiments" by the Japanese make Germany's Dr. Mengele look like
a world class medical researcher and all around good guy.
Japanese war crimes - Wikipedia
p.o.w.s were treated as sub human by the Japanese military yet
the war crimes committed by Germany gets most all the press.
Not that the German Nazi's were nice guys.
The Japanese had the most advanced germ and chemical warfare
program the world has ever seen.
Little known fact it the Japanese military sent balloons to land in the
U.S. carrying fleas infected with anthrax.
The Japanese had huge stock piles of poison gas but elected not to use
them. The war was lost by that time anyway and being hanged as a
war criminal wasn't very appealing.
Some balloons actually landed in the American north west.

Do you think this is a good thing? Do Americans think this is just a gesture or is it an important step for improving international relations?
I would rather hear the full speech of anyone so I can judge for myself rather than base my opinions on snippets of information guided by well paid media parties with agendas. I'd say this is just fluff and pillow talk, a general courtesy extended for no real reason, *a Kowtow from a man that wasn't even a glint in his sake drunken fathers bloodshot eyes during the war (he was born in '54 ). I imagine Godzilla played a large part as a tragic hero in his youth, Johnny Socko didn't start until '67 so he was about 13 and probably felt too old to watch the "kiddie" shows, In the end I'd say it's just an empty courtesy for no apparent reason.

* I don't really know if his father was drunk on sake at the time of his conception or that he had bloodshot eyes

The ONLY reason the Japanese surrendered is because we
dropped two A bombs on them.
The Japanese mistakenly thought we had more.
We did not.
Gen. Curtis LeMay, Army Air Force commander WWII, said:
"kill enough of them (the Japanese) and they will quit fighting."
Sadly that was entirely correct.
We dropped only two A-bombs because we ONLY HAD TWO.
Otherwise we'd likely have dropped a couple more for effect.
The Japanese military had the most advanced bio weapons
program the world had ever known and would have used
the bio weapons had the A-bombs not been used.
The bio weapons were liberally tested on the Chinese but we don't
read that in our history books today now do we?
History you see.

You are entitled to your opinion, and if you read my post in entirety you would have noticed my very first statement was

"Don't expect an apology nor do I feel one is necessary"

But I also added that they do really need to apologize to China for the war crimes they committed there that rival that of the Nazis. And they killed, tortured and maimed a lot of civilians there

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
People apologising for the actions of people who previously guided national identities have always weirded me out.

The war is done. Both sides did atrocious things.
There's no reason the current Japanese government to feel obligated to apologise.

I think I would like a more Civilisation like response such as "Shall we make a declaration of friendship to the world?" or just making it clear they were on good terms and regret the countries histories.

Good post.

We should learn from history.

That said, Japan has come a long way since imperialism.

It was not an apology, and Obama didn't apologize when he was in Hiroshima earlier this year. Fine by me. Japan is a great ally, and we should continue the strong relationship. I was ecstatic that Trump's first meeting with a world leader was the prime minister of Japan.

Meh, if they hadn't their entire country would've run out of oil.

So it was either: Attack the US or welcome to the middle ages.

And why were they running out of oil? What was some of that oil being used for? What was the reason for the embargo? Do you know?
