Wow... Let me ponder for a moment.
First let me say this, your lack of degree and formal education was always a suspicion of mine. For all the right reasons though, there is a big difference between someone who learned on his own dime, his own way, for his own reasons, and probably from a much greater variety of sources than would be available in a structured environment.
Furthermore, it shows a genuineness and love for that which you learn to do it for no other reason other than to learn. Many kudos to you, and much respect for what you do. I hope your children have already benefited from you experiences, and I hope your grand kids will as well.

It also seems my road is much shorter as I am half your age, but we are at pretty much the same place with God. God is best left alone, as anything other than that only taints and under appreciates God for what God might be. Rather, we absorb ourselves in relevant info surrounding the concepts and history related to the subject. Which to me seems the most genuine.

You have perhaps been one of the most influential persons in my life that has challenged me to rethink what I am saying, feeling etc... For that I thank you. It has made me appreciate whatever God is far beyond anything I did before. Which ironically came about by letting God go, and accepting I haven't a clue, yet I still search.

Don't suppose I have any questions for you at this time. I appreciate you opening yourself up to questions, but you have already answered most of mine over the course of discussion. Sorry to be so long winded.

Cool? I'd much rather be a university student or Syro-Palestinian archaeologist or food bank coordinator or ...

You can go on summer digs if you have the money to travel.

[I bet you know it, but that might be of interest]

Hi Jayhawker
In your experience, both online and off, have you found many people who go into Judaism or even "convert"? Has any stated that they feel themselves attracted to it greatly despite a different background? If so is there any observations you wish to share, please?

This is not an evaluation of Judaism but my curiousity.
Thanks
Onkarah.

I thought of a question.

How much do your relations with your grandchildren, children, or others you might hold in your heart as a treasure influence your "hope" of an everlasting life, despite any objective evidence to the contrary?
By this I mean, irrelevant of any doubts you have about what God might be and what life and death ultimately lead too, does this special love between the above mentioned act as a source of "hope" that whatever happens, good might undoubtedly be part of the end result?

Plenty of time yet - my Nan went back to education at 82. Made me PROMISE not to tell my Dad :D

Are you tempted to go back to Uni PT?
I would love to do so, but I suspect that I will not have time before retirement or disposable funds after retirement. On the other hand, I have a great family, a great life, ready access to books, and the capability and willingness to pursue them. I'm blessed ...

It's a matter of money, time, and the quality of the experience one is seeking.

I have enough money to address all reasonable priorities.

Since I work full time, there are real constraints on my time. Much can be done with 5 weeks of vacation, but these five weeks are best shared with my wife and grandchildren -- at least for now.

Going on a dig has its attractions, but it's also easily romanticized. I'd much rather spend 8 hours listening to Mazar or Finkelstein in lecture than sifting dirt.

It will come ...

Why aren't you answering zenzero?
I've had zenzero on my ignore list for some time and, to be honest, had not noticed him. I'll remove him from the list for this thread ...

..., what does it mean to be *Jayhawker Soule*???
I do not understand the question, but if I did ...
Abraham Joshua Heschel once wrote: "To be is to stand for."

To "be *Jayhawker Soule*" is to "stand for" an appreciation of Jayhawker Silas Soule.
I hope you found that responsive. My apologies for the unintended slight.

Most people I know go into Judiasm by marrying into it.

If so is there any observations you wish to share, please?
Only that I find the Torah endlessly fascinating.

In truth, not at all ... not even with the loss of my daughter.
