Jehovahs witnesses

O.K, i respect all religions, i have nothing against them....

But what i don't like is when religious people, (I.E. Jehovahs witnesses), come knocking your door to teach and preech to you about their religion and possible try and convert you.

Should they honestly be allowed to do this?

Whats your views on this?

hi! maybe i could help.
i have been a baptist jw and i can tell you that saying yu were one of them might work. but telling lies i dont' support. maybe writing them a letter address to the service overseer stating your request in straight words would be more direct. another way is to arm yourself with their failed prophecies and give them a good run for their money and then tell them not to came back or any of poblishers fro that matter.
they are free to door to door. but you are free to stop them from caming. just ask or take my other adivce.

I wouldn't mind if atheists decided to go door to door (I can't imagine that ever happening, however). ;)
About ignoring signs, they used to ignore our "No Solicitor" signs, too until we changed it to something easier to understand. I think some people don't realize what solicitor means.

Actually that reminds me of John Saffron where he does exactly that! He puts on a shirt and tie and a tag that says atheist and starts knocking on doors in a Mormon neighborhood. Priceless.

As for "I think we can make our own minds up, we don't need people going from door to door trying to convince people," what do you do for those who don't know their options and so don't have the information necessary to make up their own minds? The reason religions go door-to-door is because it has some effectiveness. There are thousands and thousands of people who convert to a religion because door-to-door missionaries visited them. I understand it's not your cup of tea, but what do you say to those who would not have converted but for their experience with door-to-door missionaries?
i agree 100%. SDA also go doo to door.
As for your current experience, can't you politely, yet firmly, tell them you're not interested and do not want them to come back? If that doesn't work, just tell them you're Mormon. JW's don't usually continue visiting Mormons. The two are like vampires and werewolves that way.
[/QUOTE]
why do you think the to are like vampires? to me the have had some polite conversations none converting the other. but i myself once asked one a question about attire and got the round the bush answer. so i never bother again to have conversation. to strange.

JW's have a 'do not call' list. Next time they come to your door just say "what a coincidence! I used to be a special pioneer before I was dis fellowshipped." You'll be on the list in no time:D

thats not a nice thing lying. just tell them your not welcome at all and call their branch and tell them not to come back or.

u seem to know a lot? where is that quote from. nwt or kjv?
they do believe that sincerely but some don't respect the wishes of others. some open gates that don't belong to them or their member s or family or friends and some like to argue and some don't want to leave. but come back to give you magazines you don't want.

I was thinking the same thing NM. I found the video here - it's hilarious.
I should warn people though, he has a bit of a rant about Mormons before going out to spread the atheist 'good news'.

I could do with the atheist what I do with the JWs. Just smile and nod a bit and take their literature (if it's free). :)I like reading.

About the 'No Soliciting' signs... I'm not a lawyer but the door 2 door folk just seem to ignore them. Reminds me of all these bongus charities that call at all hours, we tell them to put us on their 'do not call' list and they get all huffy and tell us they're exempt, because they're charities. I have my own charities thank-u-very-much-quit-calling.

As for the door 2 door folks, tell them your Jewish or they see your mezzuza and you zoom to the freakin TOP of their list, I tell ya... :bonk:

I've often considered, while standing at my door confronted by missionaries of any religion, turning around suddenly and yelling back into my house something along the lines of "make sure the sacrifical goat doesn't get away!", or if I have someone home with me to play along having them yell "she's escaping out the backdoor!" at which point I say "damn, where are we going to get a virgin to sacrifice now?" turn to the missionaries "one of you wouldn't happen to be a virgin would you?"

Draka!
You and yosi would make very good friends. He has told me he wants to say something along the lines of "The Christians are here! Now we can make the matzah!" LOL.

That`s hysterical.

I wish my JW would come back.
He hasn`t been to my house in over a year, we used to have some lengthy discussions but I guess he`s written me off as a lost cause.

Scripturally and spiritually they are dedicated to do this. Socially, they are allowed and in most instances make the local police departments aware when they are in the area.

Why are you only targetting JWs? Many religions and many other groups/organizations go door-to-door.

As "should they honestly be allowed to do this?" - the answer is YES. Do we get to supress speech just because we don't like it? No.
In over forty years of residential living, I have never had another religious organization approach my door except for Jehovah's Witnesses. At one time I thought they were the only religion to do this.

Ill admit that they are annoying as hell and I wish they did not do it, but still, I think they should be allowed to, just as advertisers are allowed.

That's all they are really, advertisers. As soon as I hear they are JW I just politely say "no thanks", and if they try to continue the conversation then I will not so politely just shut the door in their face.
One time, I received a phone call before the visit. I had to meet this Jehovah's Witness face-to-face to commend him on his approach and procedure. When Jehovah's Witnesses come knocking, it is usually an inappropriate time but a phone call only takes a few seconds to confirm or deny their offer. I don't enjoy drop ins and I believe that a phone call appointment should be set up first because if the home owner doesn't have the time at the present, another date with the resident could be discussed.

I've never had missionaries at my door at all.
There is a scripture that they use to justify their missionary work:

Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."

Storm, I do not know if you realize this but you could be single-handedly holding off Jehovah's Judgment Day of Armageddon.

Next time they come knocking, invite them in, sit them at your table, get your Bible out and request them to show you where they are getting some of the stuff they teach. When you put them to task, they usually don't come back.

I had a great time asking them how they could ignore some things that are contrary to their faith. I told them I would come to their Church if they came to mine. They declined my offer.

I don`t know Rick.

That`s exactly how I started my years long relationship with David(The JW who used to come every couple of weeks)

That simple act had him coming back again and again.

I miss him.
