Why do you think it will be soon?
Your question speaks to a basic tenet of my faith. I believe the Old and New Testaments prophesy that Jesus will return one day and they also offer signs of the times.
I believe part of the reason that God called Joseph Smith to be a prophet and to restore the complete Church of Jesus Christ was to prepare the world for the second coming of the Savior. Following is a part of what I believe was a revelation from Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith:
11 Wherefore the voice of the Lord is unto the ends of the earth, that all that will hear may hear:
12 Prepare ye, a
prepare ye for that which is to come, for the Lord is b
nigh;
13 And the a
anger of the Lord is kindled, and his b
sword is bathed in heaven, and it shall fall upon the inhabitants of the earth.
14 And the a
arm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the b
day cometh that they who will not c
hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his d
servants, neither give e
heed to the words of the prophets and f
apostles, shall be g
cut off from among the people;
15 For they have a
strayed from mine b
ordinances, and have c
broken mine d
everlasting covenant;
16 They a
seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man b
walketh in his c
own d
way, and after the e
image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth f
old and shall perish in Babylon, even g
Babylon the great, which shall fall.
17 Wherefore, I the Lord, a
knowing the calamity which should come upon the b
inhabitants of the earth, c
called upon my d
servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and e
spake unto him from heaven, and gave him f
commandments;
18 And also gave commandments to others, that they should proclaim these things unto the world; and all this that it might be fulfilled, which was written by the prophets
19 The a
weak things of the world shall come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones, that man b
should not counsel his fellow man, neither c
trust in the arm of flesh
20 But that every man might a
speak in the name of God the Lord, even the Savior of the world;
21 That faith also might increase in the earth;
22 That mine everlasting a
covenant might be established;
23 That the a
fulness of my b
gospel might be c
proclaimed by the d
weak and the simple unto the ends of the world, and before e
kings and f
rulers.
24 Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these a
commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their b
language, that they might come to c
understanding.
Here the Lord says his coming is "nigh". The reason my church is called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is because I believe we are in the "latter-days" or the end times just preceeding the return of Christ to earth. Now, we don't know when the time will come, and nobody does, but God has spoken in our day and age and said in effect "get ready, it's soon".
Just like in ancient times, the "real thing" prophets are on the earth again and marvelous things are happening to prepare the earth for the return of Jesus. As a familiar LDS hyms says:
"The visions and blessings of old are returning and angels are coming to visit the earth. We'll sing and we'll shout with the armies of heaven, Hosanna, Hosanna, to God and the Lamb, let glory to them in the highest be given, hence forth and forever, amen and amen."
The second coming is referred to in scripture as the "great and dreadful day of the Lord". I believe it can and will be a "great" day for many, the day when many will lovingly embrace Jesus as their Lord and Savior. It will be a dreadful time for those the Lord identifies as the wicked, who openly rebelled against God in their manner of living.
