John the Baptist a Zealot.

John lived in Galilee in a time that he would have survived a tax war in which 2000 were murdered, and another 6000 sent to slavery.

there were 4 main groups of judaism at the time and jtB fits into the Zealots very well.

lived outdoors, had no money therfor he didnt pay taxes at all. Ate bugs and wild honey to survive and wore a camel hair tunic that amounts to a burlap sack.

he was obviously a doosday cult leader that jesus took to.

This kingdom of god is debated by scholars on its exact meaning, what I see is a evolution of its meaning. Starting in judaism witgh John this "kingdom" had a different meaning from that of the roman version. And exactly what we see in scripture is contradictions with this evolving theme.

the four main groups of judaism were

Zeaolts the largest group in which most poor jews belonged to

Saducees the hated jewish governement who ran the temple and treasury

Pharisees the righteous preist promoting strict adherance to jewish law

Essenes a minority group avoiding the rest. living a selfless existance

JtB has many Essene traits, and were not certain how much influnece is there from this group, I see both Zealots and Essenes with Zeolts just edgeing out influence

Zeolots due to his geographic location in Galilee, and writings based on jesus who was his student/apostle

The picture of John the Baptist as a "doomsday cult leader" that you portray bears no resemblance to the man of faith and integrity the scriptures present. (Matthew 11:7-15)

scripture has never been about accurate history.

its about theology, and even then JtB is still a doomsaday cult leader

I don't think that there's enough information about John the Baptist for us to be able to put together a very accurate image of him.

Galilean
poverty stricken
anti society
apocolyptic teacher
his influences on jesus

And... that's it.
You're not quite wrong, but you can't really think that it's possible to reconstruct a human being from several sentences, right?

true

but using what we have in scripture AND with cultural anthropology of first century Galilee, combined with the the influences we have on jesus. We can construct the most likely charactor. Or enough pieces to get a good idea.

A Galilean teacher/healer who baptised people and telling stories of the coming kingdom of god, tells us quite a bit in its own right. add other details in scripture and we have a pretty clear picture that he was not a Saducee or Pharisee correct?

that leaves Essene's and Zealots and a few subsects.

He carried many Essene traits with his anti-social actions, but the geograpphic location held many more Zealots then anything else. With JtB being jesus largest influence, and jesus being questioned why he didnt pay taxes and according to Luke 23 being put on the cross for tax evasion, and the disturbance in the temple regarding money. its safe to say JtB very well could have been heavily influenced by Zealots

case in point

if i said there is a christian bum living down in tent at the river preaching about jesus.

is there really more that would help us have a much clearer picture of this historical charactor
