There are a lot of mythologies about these, but I think they are all metaphors about about the law of reaping what you sow, or karma. Imagine a day where everything hidden from the light of day in your life, all your fears and shortcomings, are brought out into the light for you and everyone else to see? Wouldn't it be better to clean your house out now, and not have cause to be ashamed?
That's what they really about about. Be a good person, and have nothing to be ashamed about. Bring them out into the light of day, allows them to be forgiven. And in that happen for ourselves, we then can do that for others. As it says in the bible, "forgive us our sins and we forgive those who sin against us."
"Judgement day" is a variant on the broader apocalyptic mythology that is specific to some traditions of Christianity, and perhaps some other Abrahamic religions and new religious movements inspired by that heritage. I don't know that much about it, specifically, since those mythologies are not relevant in my tradition. Nor does my tradition have any other mythologies about apocalyptic events.
Druidry - and Paganism more broadly - emphasizes a cyclical view of time. This mythology is fundamentally incompatible with apocalyptic ones or stories about some sort of "end times." There are no "endings" in a cyclical view of time. Or rather, endings are constantly happening in tandem with beginnings. This view, in my opinion, is more reflective of the reality we experience. Apocalyptic narratives are appealing because the tap into escapism - that some day everything will be all over and we won't have to worry anymore because there is some final ending. That is not reflective of how we experience life, much less what we can understand about our world through studying history and the sciences (especially environmental sciences like ecology).

Judaism does have not a literal day but a time. Jewish eschatology - Wikipedia
In the East with a concept of reincarnation there are no dead to be judged but that life is reviewed after each incarnation for the future.
But also there are other concepts such as mahapralaya, great dissolution, when the created universe is ended. There are also lesser pralayas where there is great destruction but the universe continues.
Looking a bit more, the closest concept I know of is of a day of judgement is Sri Aurobindo's discourse Hour of God which speaks of a time of testing. That discourse ends (emphasis mine):
But being pure cast aside all fear; for the hour is often terrible, a fire and a whirlwind and a tempest, a treading of the winepress of the wrath of God; but he who can stand up in it on the truth of his purpose is he who shall stand; even though he fall, he shall rise again, even though he seem to pass on the wings of the wind, he shall return.
Nor let worldly prudence whisper too closely in thy ear; for it is the hour of the unexpected, the incalculable, the immeasurable. Mete not the power of the Breath by thy petty instruments, but trust and go forward.
But most keep thy soul clear, even if for a while, of the clamour of the ego. Then shall a fire march before thee in the night and the storm be thy helper and thy flag shall wave on the highest height of the greatness that was to be conquered.

Judgement Day is a concept of the Christian eschatology. It has even made it into their creed. They believe that Jesus will return to earth and that he will be judging "the living and the dead". The basis is the hallucinatory fever dream (possibly from food poisoning) of an individual known as John.
It is also used as a figure of speech meaning "the end (of earth as we know it, mankind)" or the semester finals.
It affects us in so far as even powerful people believe in it (and believe it will happen in their lifetime). Thus, they don't bother about the future of mankind and refuse to take action against climate change.

Talking about theist Hindus, you are judged all the time. The elder son of the Sun God, Shani (Saturn), judges your actions from second to second in your daily life, and if he feels it necessary, he either rewards you or punishes you according to your deeds. He is feared and is a bit of extremist. He can break your leg or double your emoluments. Once a person is dead, his soul goes to Lord Yama's office, i.e., the younger son of Sun God. There, the accountant, Chitragupta, the father of the 'Kayastha' caste, presents the balance sheet of your deeds - so many and this, this and this good deeds; and so many and this, this and this bad deeds. Yama then rewards you for the good deeds with a stay in heaven and punishes you with stay in hell for your bad deeds. So, you may get three years in heaven and two years in hell. Where you want to go first is your choice. The actions are never compounded. One gets the rewards and punishment separately. There are more details. After this is over, you are sent back to the world in another body. Kindly check in the Wikipedia article about 'karma'. All this because it is the law of the universe, Ritam.
As for me, I am an 'Advaitist', I was not born, I will not die, no heaven or hell for me, I am eternal. I am Brahman (Aham Brahmasmi).

* Judgement day is the separation of the righteous from the unrighteous! Who are Righteous? They are those who DO RIGHT!

We all need help at some stage in life.....
First we have to know why a judgment day is even necessary before we understand what it is.
Why do humans need judging? It goes back to Eden when our first father Adam threw all his children under the bus (metaphorically speaking) by disobeying a direct command from God and becoming sinful and subject to its consequences...i.e. subject to wrong decisions leading to wrongdoing and death. Like an awful genetic defect, we inherited his debt.
God sent a rescue mission in the person of Jesus Christ, but only after allowing the first humans to fulfill the first mandate given to them.....to "fill the earth" with their kind. Each one however was born with the defect of sin, (Romans 5:12) but that in itself was not a reason to lose our everlasting life on account of it. God provided his word and the teachings of his son to guide us to a way that would not lead to everlasting death....the penalty that Adam suffered. His children would be given an opportunity to prove that they could defeat sin by their obedience to God....as Christ had done.
This is what the judgment is for....to see who among mankind can see the value of obedience to God without question, and who believes that it is more beneficial to do your own thing, regardless of what God's says. At this time in history we would clearly see who was would qualify for a place in the Kingdom of God, and who would forfeit their life to selfish ambitions.
If you go back to Eden, obedience is all God ever asked of his earthly children....disobedience took their life away and obedience gets it back, thanks to the sacrifice of Christ who paid the debt that Adam left for his children so that we could become citizens of God's Kingdom on earth.
I believe that doing things God's way rather than our own way is the key to gaining his approval.
The criteria for citizenship is obedience in everything. We can't 'earn' a spot in the kingdom but we can put ourselves in line for it by our conduct. Our entry is up to Jesus who is appointed as judge of all of us. He can read hearts. (Matthew 7:21-23)
I believe that it is necessary because God always finishes what he starts. (Isaiah 55:11) He purposed for this earth to be filled with obedient humans who would represent him here as caretakers of the planet and all the living things upon it....including each other. We have strayed very far from that original prospect, so God set a time limit where he would allow human kind to fill the earth and he would educate them about his ways and then judge them accordingly. But there was a time limit....filling the earth would take time.
Since the Kingdom will "come" ready or not, it is up to us to be found by God obedient to all his commands when it does. We will get little warning about the day and the hour, but the times will alert us to its approach......the world will be in chaos which will get progressively worse. The ruling powers would be pushing against one another.
We have no idea what God is going to do with the rest of the Universe but its vastness suggests that we will not be the only lifeforms in existence....he may well want to fill other planets with living things because he is a Creator who loves to create. I guess we will find out soon enough.
The judgment that Jesus metes out when he manifests as judge will only be for the separation of "the sheep from the goats"...IOW those who are alive at that time will receive one judgment or the other....but there is another judgement day of 1,000 years where the rulership of God's Kingdom will see the resurrection of the dead and their education during that time in preparation for one final test at the end of that period.....only those who pass that final test will inherit what Adam threw away....everlasting life in paradise on earth.
