Did you celebrate, if so what did you do, and what is the significance of Juneteenth? Here is the definition:
Today, June 19, is celebrated as “Juneteenth.” The day commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the U.S.

Since this year’s holiday falls on a Sunday, the federal government will mark it on Monday, June 20th. Government offices and buildings will be closed on Monday and mail will not run.

My school had monday off in celebration of it. Happy my work recognizes this special holiday.

It marks the first day that news reached the ears of those held captive.

Yep. I got together with some family (Kentucky "Creole"/crypto-African/Melungeon) and friends for a cookout and games. I have current relatives who are black, as well.

I also celebrated Midsummer with my coven. A busy busy weekend. :p

I watched some of the celebration on CNN. I noticed Fox news wasn't covering. I relaxed also.

I avoided the courts, which have shut down
for yet another paid holiday out of the year.
Taxpayers & those in need of justice will pay
the price for government's being fashionable.

It's just another day off for federal workers.

Like usual.

Everyone else works.

Anyways why just say the 19th like normal people do? What's with this 'teenth' bs?

It just makes a person look yet again stupid, lazy, and dumb.

I'm not American, so please forgive my ignorance, but isn't Juneteenth about marking the end of slavery?
The date is.
But the government shut-down is about 2 different things...
- Giving the appearance of caring to black folk.
(Do they really care that someone else gets another
paid holiday? Nah. Pandering without real benefit.)
- Getting more paid vacation at taxpayer expense.
If they only had the power to give this away to others
(not themselves), it wouldn't happen.

It can be highjacked for political, social or racial reasons.
And government giving itself another paid
holiday at someone else's expense.
A cynic might joke that it's good because of
less government. However, it means that
their great power over us will be wielded by
aparatchiks who will give even less thought
to their jobs than before.

I was taken out to lunch by a friend who was supposed to see me on my birthday (the 19th.)

Later on, I developed symptoms for what I would discover the following day is covid.

Happy Juneteenth everyone!

I'm seeing some opposition to what seems to be an uncontroversial holiday, if one considers its origin. What's with that? Of all reasons for a national holiday, emancipation of slaves seems to me among the best. Is there anything I'm missing?
