Just a friendly Debate

I've never really discussed the topic of religion with anyone and wanted to talk with anyone about why they believe in whatever they believe. I call myself an atheist, but I guess i'm more excepting of the faith concept than others. I guess I'm somewhat agnostic. Anyway, I'm open to discussing/debating anything. Post away!

I guess to start off, why do you personally believe in what you do? Was it an experiance you had? Do you have evidence that your belief? Something like that to start this off.

What I believe in fits in with what I currently know.

Okay. What are your beliefs? Do you believe in evolution or intelligent design? No, wait, that topic I feel is over-discussed. How about the origins of the universe? I personally believe in the Big bang but either way I feel that's a good way to start this off.

How do you think our universe began?

I think a lot of it depends on whether you are a 'spiritual person' by nature or more of a black and white scientific type. Do you only accept what can be proved or do you have the feeling that something is out there?

I accept the Big Bang theory(although admittedly, I don't understand it very well, yet). I also accept the theory of biological evolution via natural selection, BTW. :p

Welcome to the RF!

I believe what I do because I believe what I do. I was agnostic until I was nearly 18.

Okay then. Good start. Why do you think your feeling is right? Here is the thing: I look at the ancient Egyptian Gods and I feel something there. I'm not quite sure what it is. But I feel something in me that says, "The truth lies with them." I feel good when I see those gods. I feel a connection with the god Ra. God of the sun. And by the way, this is not something I'm pulling out of my ***.

But then I think, do I go act on this feeling? My first answer is no. But, the feeling is still there. It is not just a fascination with ancient culture. It is something more. I have no reason for it being there, or at least not that I can think of, and it tugs at my heart

My question to you is this: Should I follow this feeling? Should I worship these gods? Despite what you might think, this is a serious question.

Oh, and please tell me if I seem close-minded, and please tell me how I am doing so. I wish to obliterate that from myself.

I know about the quote button. My earlier posts were meant to be as broad as possible.

Okay, but there still must be a reason, be it faith, logic, experience, etc

Jesus in me
I believe that I was predisposed to Christianity from a previous life. Just as some children take more to art than others, I leaned more to religion than others but not in a conventional sense but more in a spiritual sense.

I believe in intelligent design. No doubt that might appear to be evolution to someone who doesn't believe there is an itelligence behind everything.

The Big Bang theory is a bust. The proble is that one can't just observe the sun rising and say that the sun revolves around the earth. The Big Bang theory is the equivalent of that.

God is quite capable of creating everything in place at the same time or in pieces at diferent times.

Welcome...

Every one has some sort of interest in Religion
Christians believe that the Holy Spirit guides us all along our path. May be he led you here to find what ever you are looking for.
Or may be you just followed a well worn route.
Either way there will be no shortage of information.
However "faith" is a step you take yourself.

Welcome to RF. :)

I am a Muslim and I believe that this distinction between religion and science is superficial and real knowledge encloses both and more. Hypnotised and mesemerised with the materialistic progress that practical scientific applications have given to the world, many people understand only that knowledge as real knowledge. For them the knowledge of the self, and of the heart (soul) is of little consequence. I consider both equally relevant. We need to enhance our knowledge of both the physical world and of the metaphysical world.

I think there are some tests for close-mindedness:

Will you answer all questions about your beliefs calmly, without rancor? If so, open-minded.

Do you ever become angry at those who ask you difficult questions about your beliefs? Then closed-minded.

Are you willing to define your terms in your own simple words -- to paraphrase them for anyone who asks? Open-minded.

Do you avoid discussion with certain debaters who make you feel uncomfortable with their questions? Closed-minded.

That's my idea of testing the state of one's mind, anyway.

There`s no use debating with a believer if you are not a believer. Take it from me.
