can someone explain the concept of kalki to me?

amongst vaisnavas kalki is concidered the last incarnarion of visnu who closes this age of kali ,(kali yuga)is the fourth and most degraded age by anihilating the misscreant godless beings and liberating the faithfull .

In Hinduism the universe cycles. Kalki is the Mythological figure who will end this cycle and start the next. He is seen as a Avatara (means descent) of Vishnu and refers to a descent of the divine into mundane form. This is the time of darkness Kalki will bring us to a time of light. This next time period (yuga) will then also over time fall into a dark time once again. This happens over and over again.

It is believed that at the end of this Age (Kali-Yuga), the world will be filled with very bad people. It will be a world of selfishness and ignorance and where Dharma is almost completely eliminated.

At this time, Kalki is believed to come and kill these terrible people and bring back Dharma and knowledge of Veda. Then a new Age will begin and the people of this Age will be wise, righteous and good.

For the record, and for your clarification, the idea of Kalki, as explained well here, holds only in one sect of Hinduism - Vaishnavism.

The information I get about the Yugas in general. I find of no importance in my daily life. Other then just a description of the nature of our planet at this time. When I was leaving temple tonight a friend said. Well, back to the Kali Yuga. Other then that I really don't see a practical use for the concept.

true we are stuck in this small moment in time and the prophecies might seem erelevant , but still we recognise that the world is corrupt and for the large part godless , we are aware that poilticians and rulers are corrupt , and even within the short span of our lifetimes we see a degredation of the world , we see irriligion and self intrest florishing and in the light of what we see we try to promote right thinking we try to bring our families up in a god conscious manner , we try to promote harmony and understanding , but still we know that it is not easy , it is not widely appreciated or widely practiced .
we can see into the imidiate future and understand that we face many problems , overpopulation of the world , a shortage of food , an unevenness of distribution , a society that will look out for its own whilst it is happy to take from another in the name of trade ,.....the list is endless all we can do is recognise the effects of kali yuga .

the practical use for the concept is understanding the mecanics of this great cycle of time , if we understand and realize our place within it we are for warned of the concequences of attatching to this life , if we attatch to it we will become part of it , however if we attatch to god we will gain release from it .if we understand the inevitable nature of the cycle of time we begin to understand god , the supreme parameshwara in which case we become fearless and detatch from this world .

for those that recognise the prophecies of the coming of kalki this is concidered to be both a curse and a blessing , what we see as a possible violent act of distruction is infact an act of mercy as when kalki comes he will anihilate the godless and corrupt , but by ending the age of kali and ushering in the new satya yuga (age of goodness truth and rightiousness)and by doing so he will liberate even the most degraded of souls for if the lord takes a life the soul is imidiately liberated .

but for us now , what relevance does this hold ?

the vaisnavas who are praying to kalki do so for the liberation of lost souls , they do so because they see the needless suffering that is increasing in this age of kali , they see the godlessness of society and the corupt nature of our rullers and they fear for future generations .

as a vaisnava I do not fear for you as you have your own devotions nor do I fear for vinayaka ji he also has his devotion , and allthough we are of different traditions I am happy that you have your own path , but is is the children of future generations that are to be born in to a godless society that will have no knowledge of god that worries the vaisnava, and for that reason the vaisnava is praying to kalki to come and end this degenerate age and bring the return of satya yuga .

Yes, but that's true for a lot of this kind of philosophy. Go to work. Make an honest living. Hang with spiritual people. Do sadhanas.

I, for one, don't see it as 'bad', that's for sure. I think, for some people, focussing on it is an excuse, or brings on lower states like hopelessness.
