Laser procedure can turn brown eyes blue

(CNN)From the piercing blue eyes of Paul Newman to the steely gaze of Daniel Craig, blue eyes have always been a measure of attractiveness.

But exactly why they make hearts throb and catapult actors and models to stardom is a point of conjecture.

Theories range from evolutionary psychologists who say that blue-eyed women in Palaeolithic societies had a better chance of standing out in the crowd, others posit that pupil dilation -- a signifier of attraction -- is easier to see in lighter eyes.

Either way, just 17% of the world's population has blue eyes.

For the majority of the world's population -- an estimated 80% - those elusive movie star eyes can usually only be obtained with the aid of colored contact lenses. But today there's a medical procedure that can permanently turn your brown eyes blue.

Pioneered by Stroma Medical, the laser procedure works by eliminating the brown melanin that's present in the anterior layers of the iris.

"The fundamental principle is that under every brown eye is a blue eye," Dr Gregg Homer told CNN, adding that there is no actual blue pigmentation in the eye.

"The only difference between a brown eye and a blue eye is this very thin layer of pigment on the surface.

I think this is rather sad and a bit sick, honestly. People with dark features have been viewed as "second best" compared to people with lighter features for centuries and this problem is still pervasive. We have black and brown people making fools out of themselves and acting out their self-hatred through bleaching their hair, skin lighteners, nose jobs, colored contacts and eye implants. Now this.

Whatever happened to "Black is beautiful"?

I think there is an innate need in the human soul to improve one's self. That is the drive that is meant to push people onward, to become better people. Only, when this drive is not harnessed in the spiritual sense, it drives its owner to focus on his/her physical self. And that is only emptiness.

Having grown up in a pre-dominantly blue-eyed population, I find brown eyes alluring and mesmerizing.

I notice that when I do a Google Image search for "blue eyes", the results seem unrealistically saturated in colour. This is not how blue eyes look, they are really more greyish.

Nothing wrong with brown eyes that you have to go to surgery for and possibly ruin your eyesight.

(Nothing wrong with being black, yellow, white, red or other color either.) :)

I find this a kind of sick form of self-mutilation to be honest. the way in which a social standard of beauty is imposed upon people and the lengths they are prepared to go to live up to it. And yeah, it may well be a reflection of racist conceptions of beauty.

This is just absolutely sickening and disgusting. But, if there is a market for something, it will be exploited. Absolutely sickening.

Nothing happened to it. Different people have different aesthetic sensibilities, and that's to be expected.

On the whole, I think caucasians are the least aesthetically pleasing of humanity's races. It is far easier to get lost in the deep warmth of dark eyes than the cold harshness creepiness of blue ones, and dark hair always frames the face better than light hair does. Plus, white babies are butt ugly and disgusting. Granted, I hate babies on the whole, but I can better tolerate looking at black babies and asian babies (provided they have properly dark eyes; the blue eye thing is just cold and creepy).

But none of this means anything
, it's just a personal preference. People are allowed to have those, no matter how "politically incorrect" they may be perceived to be.

People do all kinds of surgery, breast implants, gender changes. Getting tattoos is pretty much accepted now but it falls in the same category. We don't have to agree with them or the reasons they do it. We just have to accept there are people like this who are not happy with what they have.

Gender reassignment therapy is typically due to transsexualism, and not a mere aesthetic adjustment. I am not convinced that they are comparable.

True, it's not completely the same. But things like breast implants are comparable to the laser procedure. Just because it feels unnatural to us, doesn't give us a right to judge someone who does this.

I'm pretty sure I know a person who often wears blue contacts who would take this if it were safe and affordable. Not that I would ask her why or know her well enough to make a judgment.

Um...okay. o_O

Some of the stuff you say is a bit disturbing and weird but I'm getting used to it.

Sex changes are due to transsexualism, which is a real medical condition with scientific evidence to back it up. Tattoos don't belong there, either, because that's art and not necessarily based out of following some unnatural standard of beauty or hating a part of yourself.

Sure, we can judge them. We can judge their motives. I don't see people with lighter features rushing to have their eyes turned brown. Wonder why that is.

I don't think we can say everyone has the same motives for changing parts of themselves.

We have solariums for people who want darker skin. I don't think that's healthy either, but most whites at least where I live seem to want darker skin. And if they could get it without tan lines? Yes, there's (illegal) drugs like "barbie":

People buy brown contact lenses, so if there was a safe way to get pigment into the eyes I'm sure someone would do it.

I'm well-aware of tanning. That's very problematic, as well, not least because it causes skin cancer and people have died from it.

Barbie(Melanotan II) is a drug you inject and soon your skin is brown. Might ruin your health and sex life though, but some people will use it despite it.
