Legalized marijuana

We Never Know

No Slack
I was talking to a 60 yr old fella today who has smoked pot all his life. Hey grows his own but he recently started buying some pot from a dispensary. He said since he has been buying some, what he grows doesn't do much for him at all anymore because the pot he has been getting from the dispensary is genetically modified.
Said he doesn't know if that's a good thing or bad thing because its easier to become depended on.

Thoughts??

Just like the different type of beers, wines and hard liquors, the different strains of cannabis come in different THC and CBD levels, and other different characteristics. At dispensaries they are labelled with all of the relevant information and you can look it up online, too.

I am for legalization.
As long as they smoke it one or two kilometers away from me.
If they do, I am fine with it...honeys. ;)

Genetically modified pot is like comparing beer to moonshine IMO.

Marijuana is fundamentally different from alcohol. Marijuana is also problematic due to its unpredictability.

What We Know About Marijuana
"Mode of marijuana use (e.g., consuming edibles or products with high THC concentration can have delayed or unpredictable effects and increases the risk of overdose or poisoning)"

Why Are the Effects of Marijuana So Unpredictable?

Effects of cannabis - Wikipedia
"Different plants of the genus Cannabis contain different and often unpredictable concentrations of THC and other cannabinoids and hundreds of other molecules that have a pharmacological effect,[2][3] so that the final net effect cannot reliably be foreseen."

I just wish that they developed a quick way to test drivers for it. There is no reliable way to determine if someone has had too much that I know of.

They do a tongue scrape thing here but it only tests for presence not amount I think. But how stoned is too stoned to drive?

The old stuff from the seventies and sixties was like 12-14% potency. Modern stuff is closer to 22% and higher.

Need to adjust the amount used to compensate.

The increase in potency is actually due to the underground breeding during the war on drugs. Dealers.needed a way to keep their product competitive and keep customers. Potency was specifically bred for.

I would not call it genetic modification though. No more than cross breeding any other flower.

AFAIK it's not GMO but selected for potency by growers resulting in a much more potent variety.

What the OP mentioned is called "tolerance" and is noted in many drugs both medical and street.

To @Shaul 's list of references, I'd add

Emergent Medical Illnesses Related to Cannabis Use

Previously, people would smoke 1–3 mg of THC. The typical joint in Colorado contains 18 mg of THC or more. Currently, in the ED, we see patients who self-report smoking 2,000 mg or more of THC in a day.
...
cannabinoid associated hyperemesis (vomiting), acute psychosis, cannabinoid catatonia syndrome, acute myo-pericarditis (chest pain)...

New Gene Technology Allows Growers To Boost THC Levels In Cannabis

"Indiana-based biotechnology company Growing Together Research Inc. announced this week that it has developed a new technique to genetically modulate the expression of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in cannabis, including the ability to increase levels of the cannabinoid in cultivars grown for recreational or medical marijuana"

With dispensaries, you can choose whatever potency you like, pretty much. You can also choose between THC and CBD content, or both.

I've seen as low as 0.5%, going all the way up to 32% for flower.

Holy cow, dude!o_O I've never known anyone withthat kind of tolerance. Everyone I know would be puking and damn near comatose (kind of like with abusing alcohol) way before that.
