Lent

I've considered observing Lent (or something similar) even as a non-Christian, because I think it's a good way to practice temperance. I already live under a perpetual fast and dedicate most of my time to either work or maintenance, and I don't spend much time or money on what I don't think is strictly necessary. The major reason for this is that I'm a consequentialist, so I try to optimize my life to consume as little as possible, that way I have more to give back to the world or, at the very least, I'm reducing the amount that I'm taking.

I'm not really interested in sleeping on a bed of nails or wearing a hair shirt, and it sometimes feels like that's the only next step I could make. I'm not a stranger to mortification of the flesh, so my misgivings aren't due to that, it's more that I've adopted the Stoics' philosophical opposition to pursuing suffering, which they see as just as indulgent as the pursuit of pleasure.

I'd be interested to know if you had any ideas for what I might be missing. Maybe I could change my diet more radically, going sugar-free and carb-free, for example? Maybe I could spend less time on RF? What are some areas that might be commonly overlooked?

So they've given up Lent for Lent.

Cool, cool.
It’s a win win for everyone.

I notice that Orthodox Lent does not begin until sometime in March and Pesach begins during that Lenten season so….. if it makes anyone feel better….. just think of it as I’m giving up chametz for Lent.

(For those scratching their heads over “Pesach”and “chametz” - that’s why G-d invented Google.)
