There are Jehovah's Witnesses who will not even attend a wedding in a church.
Yes, I know that, much like a JW couple across the street from us wouldn't go to a funeral mass for a neighbor next to them that they've known for over 40 years. To me, that and some other things they do and do not do, qualifies them as a "cult", especially since they put far more faith in their leaders than in Jesus or the Bible itself.
But what is most anti-Christian is their "my way or the highway" approach that claims that they somehow are the only branch that knows the "Truth", thus teaching that it's OK to judge others even though Jesus and Paul taught not to do as such.
I remember as a teenager we loved to play basketball at the YMCA. We all lived inner city, and the Y offered a safe place to play basketball.
That is, until someone in the Congregation pointed out that YMCA stood for Young Men's
Christian Association and that was the end of that. The reasoning was "What if Armageddon strikes and Jehovah sees you playing in a "false" religious institution?"
The rationale made no sense to me at the time and makes none to me now, but that's all it took to forego the "Y" and we never played ball their again.
They have other Pharisaic legalisms as well. For instance, they consider themselves to be the only "true" religion (declaring themselves the entire body of Christ), have no idea why the number partaking in the memorial emblems each year goes up and down (an important indicator to them of how "close" we are to Armageddon), yet somehow can count to the
exact hour (1,983,763,754) how much they spent in "field service" last year.
Nor will they join or bow their head in prayer with other Christians unless it is a Witness that leads the prayer. They believe praying with others in this manner will dirty them, thus rendering them spiritually "unclean".
As Metis points out, it is classic "cult" ideology.
