Liberal Protestants

I think I have finally figured out what my "label" would be...

I grew up as a Southern Baptist, but left that camp long ago. I am too much of a free thinker, and questioned a lot of what they preach. I explored different religions and denominations, cross referencing my beliefs with them.

I share a lot of views with Orthodox Judaism, but I REALLY struck home with a form of deism: Christian Deism. As odd as it may sound, CD really spoke to me. The unfortunate thing is that it is not really a denomination, but rather a philosophy. In an effort to find a church that agreed with those beliefs, I actually turned to something that had rapid growth in the 1990s and 2000s: Liberal Protestant.

The LP churches, though different from each other, really cater to the free thinkers. Many of their tenets were on par with my own. Come to find out, the LP churches "absorbed" the Christian Deists, as both are harmonious. This is a sampling of the LP beliefs (and my own):

1. The belief in God the Father, His son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Whether or not Jesus = God is debatable, as the Bible seems to contradict itself on the issue, depending on which verse you look at.

2. Many of the LP church members do not view Satan as the devil. This agrees with Orthodox Judaism and makes more sense with liberal theology.

3. Hermeneutics is used to really break down the verses, and gives an in-depth study of the Bible from multiple angles.

4. We don't need a specific dogma, creed, or governing authority. As an intelligent person with the ability to read, research and learn, I can go at it by myself.

5. The autographs may have been inerrant. We don't have them, so debating biblical inerrancy is a moot point. Translational errors do occur. We are human, after all.

I am loving it!
