But to use a practical example, I can think of people on RF who say ignorant and stupid things but I don't dislike them personally and don't want them to die or anything like that

Not wanting someone to die is pretty far low on the scale of actively liking someone, heh. Do you actually like people who say bigoted or discriminatory things or express views that you find gross? I don't often like people who talk rot. Tolerate maybe, not like though

I dislike them certainly and would not want them to come to power

I oppose them and their beliefs

But I don't hate them

I hate what they say and think

As people, I simply dislike them and have very little respect for them

In mine of course

Who else's? :D

I agree

Yup. I feel the same. I'm sure they're okay people, but I just engage elsewhere.

I guess I don't think of it as looking down, though... in my mind, I tend to think 'incompatible for friendship[with me]'.

Dislike and admire

I'm struggling with this one. I cannot imagine myself admiring someone I dislike. I consider admiration a word describing a type of affection. On the other hand, I can respect someone whom I dislike.

Am I misunderstanding the meaning of the word, "admire"? Can you give an example of an unlikable sort of individual which you would also admire?

Professor Steven Hawking is supposed to have not been very nice but he was extremely intelligent and made significant contributions to science, I think he could serve as such an example

Admirable but not necessarily likeable

I have actually seen him in real life, but never met him
