Lost once more

hello everyone! It’s been a while, but I’m back (for the moment, at least)

So I’ve been experimenting with following my own beliefs for a short time, but I found my set of beliefs shift and my efforts proved to be in vain.

I’ve also looked into more religions since then, primarily UU, but I’m shakey about it. I’ve also looked into Taoism, but it just didn’t fully fit me.

I’m not sure what to do at this point, whether I just go join a UU congregation, start experimenting again, or just stay in this limbo area I’m in, just hoping something starts to click with me.

Idk, do y’all got any advice? Any tips on how to truly find my way?

One tip....
Don't be dismayed at being lost.
Seeking has the advantage of a more exploring mind.

Caution:
I don't know what I'm talking about.

I suspect if you're looking for a religion to fit what you believe, you're beyond help.

I think the idea is to get involved with a religion to learn what to believe. You've got to pretty much drop all of your preconceptions of what should be true and accept the fundamental truths of the particular religious faith.

I'm not saying this is what you should do but it's kind of necessary to accepting one belief or another as the truth.

Otherwise you're kind of stuck trying to commingle both into something you can find acceptable.

I definitely see what you’re saying, it’s definitely a fruitless venture. My issue is that I don’t know how to just leave my beliefs of the world at the door. Besides, is it not important to find a faith you can connect to?

I don't know. I suppose only you can answer that.

Maybe, I accept the ideas of Transhumanism. Less dogmatic and more practical. A lot of atheist believe in some form of humanism.

Perhaps there is a fundamental need for man to have something to believe in. Maybe you need something very open and flexible.

UU is certainly a good community wherever you may happen to be. The principles are practical and universal. I'm going on year four of belonging to my local UU congregation.

It's a good effort to bridge gaps and differences in understanding. Even if I wasn't a traditional Buddhist, I can't imagine the UU principles could be improved much further to serve their stated purpose: the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

I just wish more people would get excited about UU. It's a great place to meet in the middle.

If you believe that there is a God who wants you to find him, wouldn't it be a good idea to ask for his help? That to me would be a good place to start.

Once you ask, be open to what he places in front of you....sometimes the truth hides in strange places. Sometimes you have to put something down before you pick something up.

You will know the truth when you find it because there will be no lingering doubts, no unanswered questions and a feeling of joy in your heart despite any dire circumstances in your life. That was my experience anyway.....:)

Wow it's almost as though you knew what becoming a Buddhist is like

The idolatry was totally off putting......sorry.

Buddhism places very little in the way of demands on people.
UU also sounds like a very convenient religion.

But I believe what Jesus said.....'the road to life is cramped and narrow, not broad and easy'.....the latter leads nowhere .....it is a dead end. (Matthew 7:13-14)

Which is also the entire problem. A lot of people naturally seek an all or nothing approach. UU is dying because it is so fluid, it offers few, if any, concrete beliefs.

Oh I understand. That's why I'm a Buddhist first, and a traditional one at that. If I haven't made that clear yet, well just give me more time to churn out Buddhist answers.

Demands are indication of truth, are they? I also wonder what makes you think that.

When you base your beliefs on the Bible, everything it says makes sense......like the fact that we are in a race for life. The unfit or unhealthy (spiritually speaking) will either not start the race or else they will not finish it. Those who don't finish, don't get the prize.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27....."Do you not know that the runners in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. 25 Now everyone competing in a contest* exercises self-control in all things. Of course, they do it to receive a crown that can perish, but we, one that does not perish. 26 Therefore, the way I am running is not aimlessly; the way I am aiming my blows is so as not to be striking the air; 27 but I pummel my body and lead it as a slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself should not become disapproved somehow."

How much effort do people put into physical races because of the reward? How much training do they put in to even be able to compete....you think a race where life is the prize should be any different? Lazy ones will still be at the starting line whining about the effort.

That’s exactly why I’m worried about with UU, that lack of solid belief. It’s appealing to have a space to practice my own beliefs while feeling like a part of a community, but I do want some structure, some doctrine of how to live, if that makes sense

It makes sense indeed. I am not sure what to recommend to you except Noachidism because it's against my code to teach you to follow idols and fals gods. I wish you well on your journey.

Is the goal connecting to God? Or a religious social group?
