More like they try to stay away from things which will confuse them. You know. Like science. :D

Poor kids.

I agree, why don't they teach them about the five mass extintion events on earth. Why don't they teach the principle about the five mass extintion events on earth?

or DNA or fossils or geology or any of it seriously.

Has anyone else noted that the more rabid the fundamentalist the more likely they are to use darwinism instead of evolution?

Honestly my state wants people to move here to help bring Louisiana into the future- do they think policies like this makes anyone want to move here?

Stuff like this is holding back the whole South.

wow is all you can say

If you think this is bad... I actually know of some young students who have a teacher who currently uses The Flinstones as an example of fact when convincing their students that humans and dinosaurs walked side by side each other, proving they were created at the same time.

I know, you think I'm making this up or not understanding what that student said... But I'm not. It's really that sad.

I see dinosaurs at my backyard feeder every day. I guess that clinches it.
Praise the Lord!

This part of a larger and more troubling trend in Lousiania... they plan on totally eliminating public schooling and going with an all voucher school system.
This story is just a perfect example of why such a system is a terrible idea.

The state is using it to essentially end the teaching of evolution... Private schools are exempt from rulings like Kitzmiller v. Dover. It's no coincidence that Pennsylvania is also following this trend.

I find it hard to express the dismay I feel as a Canadian at seeing our neighbour descending into ignorance and superstition. Not least because US trends tend to leak across our border.

Try living here with a child almost old enough to start pre-school. :p

One of the things I have to be very cognazent of as I plan out where I want to go next to get my masters/PhD is if the surrounding area has good schools for my son to attend. Early childhood education is a critical window of opportunity and I know what it's like to struggle afterwards due to bad foundational education.

I certainly don't want to be studying evolutionary biology in university only to have my son being taught creationism or other nonsense in gradeschool. :cover:

I entirely sympathize with you. My daughter recently moved to Georgia (!) and is expecting a daughter later this month. I am finding it very hard not to tell her how much I hope she will return to Canada.

Have you considered studying abroad? (Canada is abroad!:D).

This reminds me of a skit by a comedy act called Wayne and Shuster called "Dr Jekyl and Mrs Hyde". On Jekyl being asked about his absences, he replied "I've been abroad".

I feel your pain. My daughter is starting pre-school next fall. I was seriously considering home schooling but I think I will just concentrate on showing them how to think critically and objectively. If the schools here teach creationist propaganda I will use that as an opportunity to teach them about discerning fact from fairytale.

My second choice school is in Canada... unfortunately they have a GPA requirement that I just fell shy of. My last semester didn't go as well as I had hoped... juggling, extracurriculars, work, a new baby and senior level classes didn't work out.
I'm hoping that I can do well enough on the GRE's that I may be able to convince them to let me in anyway. :p

I hope things work out for you. University is hard enough without distractions. You do very well to cope with them.

Montessori, go Montessori. I was so glad to have put my daughter into a Montessori preschool before going to a public school.

And on the OP. I'm also embarrassed to be from here some times.
